Yeah, but after the race, wouldn't you like to stroll over the the F1 store (or Ferarri store) and mull around for a while?

A few years back, they had the ALMS cars run down the streets of Sac before the race at Sears Point. Now that was a sight (and sound) to see race cars on public roads in Sac. Don't know if they've done it since then; some of the drivers got a little excited.

ITS: Ya but Nascar & Busch don't race in the rain. One of many things probably eminating from your F1 mind set when you read my pro Nascar post. All in all I thought the characterization was quite acurate...didn't yall ?
Seriously though, Nascar belongs in the railyards along with the Pro Bass Shop. F1 is more like the Towers. No doubt.

ICSACON99, it's "COME", not "CUM".

If you want any of that , you'll have to head on over to the Skybar section.

I know. I am surprised. It is sooooo out of character for the Utopian urbanists on this forum to act elitist . Don't worry. It's just a fluke. We can expect them to resume their normal "tolerant" and "diverse" behavior soon .

Nope we are not elitist snobs. Nor we are utopians -Maybe we see things differently because we actually live in the city and not in the suburbs or a small college town like some. And some of us in here have actually lived in real, international cities and know what that's all about. That NASCAR and Pro Bass stuff is for country hicks and you know it. If that's what you are into then you're are not a real city person -straight up. That's OK. There's nothing wrong with being a country/suburban person. Just don't try to bring your 'values' into the city. The city is supposed to be different. It's not supposed to be the suburbs with skyscrapers. Driving your SUV to Midtown so you can eat at Zócalo and walk around a bit doesn't make you a hip urbanite --sorry.

And yes cars do seem to be kind of anti-urbanism. If fact, it's the over accomodating of the car that has been the source of a lot of problems in NA cities since WWII. Why celebrate a machine that has help to destroy the North American city?

I think what we're finding on this forum is EXACTLY what we're going to find in Sacramento...a mixed response to something NASCAR. Bass Pro Shops may be a bit different. It depends on marketing. But, NASCAR which is blatantly associated with the Republican party, is going to find a hard time fitting in in any California downtown. California is a BLUE STATE. Let's all say it together now...BLUE STATE!!! In fact, some of the greatest, most urban cities in this country are liberal cities. I don't know one liberal who is going to be happy with something NASCAR in their downtown.

Politics has nothing to do with it... have you heard of SEARS Point in the bay
area, that racetrack has several huge races every year and there are several
others that happen throughout the state... San Jose also had a huge one last
year. You guys are tiring to read WAY to much into this. Obviously there is
a market here other wise NASCAR would have no intrest in a shop here whatsoever.

This is a pointless discussion. No one has proposed a NASCAR store downtown. It started as a joke, so it's a moot point. Leave it be!

You are right! You are definitely not an elitist. The above post is a testament to that .

First of all, NASCAR races and Bass Pro Shops do not represent my "values". Watching a bunch of cars zoom around a track seems boring to me (NASCAR, Indy and F1 included) – driving a fast car is more fun than watching one, in my opinion. Also, I am not into the Bass Pro Shop thing. I do not like fishing or hunting animals (No, my guns are for “hunting” those who threaten my life, my liberty and my property – usually, people). However, I do not mind if someone else enjoys watching a race, catching a trout and/or hunting a deer- it certainly does not make him a "country hick". Goodness, for a progressive (see, I did not say "liberal"), you sure buy into a lot of stereotypes. By the way, what’s wrong with being a “country hick”? You urbanists use the phrase as a pejorative. Am I missing something?

Also, let’s take a close look at this little gem: "Just don't try to bring your values into the city." Hmmm, sounds an awful lot like, "We don't want any of your kind 'round here." That's not very tolerant and diverse, is it.

In addition, who made you the arbiter of what is "city" and what is not? Somehow you get to decide having a NASCAR store (Which, I believe started as a joke. You guys seized it as an opportunity to act like elitist jerks) is not in keeping with the city environment. Why is that? What, your Bangkok experience (insert joke here) makes you an expert? Please. I think many on this website (remember, it’s skyscraperpage.com, not hipurbanistjerk.com) believe cities are magical places; they get caught up in the city “environment” and forget the city purpose. A city is nothing more than a concentration of dwellings, offices, entertainment, places to trade goods and services, and people. It is nothing special. Cities serve those who live in and around them, that's it. A NASCAR store provides entertainment (to some) and a place to buy goods – damn, that sounds good enough to be in a city.

Finally, if you want a perfectly controlled environment, where you can enjoy the “city beat”, meet your limp-wristed friend for lattés at a fair-trade coffee shop, sit on the corner bench reading Harper’s and Vanity Fair (with your thick, black rimmed glasses, not doubt), while being insulated from the NASCAR hicks, get your buddies together and build a Utopian urbanist amusement park. There, you can create all the stupid, bigoted, urbanist parameters you want. However, I think you should leave the REAL city alone.

I don't like lattes and those of us who are "limp-wristed" certainly are not all utopian, urbanist, liberals(THERE, I said it!). Although I'm proud to be a limp-wristed, utopian, urbanist liberal!!!

lol, they really need to start digging and getting some concrete at that site, you guys are defintely getting anxious to see something. A debate about the values of retail stores has been entertaining, maybe arnie and phil can debate about their shopping habits in their debates, hehe.
