In Starship Chicago II we have an entire segment dedicated to the atrium floor and an interview with Ben Capp of Wolverine stone who tells the story of how it came to be, if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the update Solar! This has to be one of my most anticipated projects in the city currently. The transformation of the Loop that the redevelopment of the Thompson Center could potentially trigger are absolutely enormous. It will be exciting to watch it all unfold.

From your lips to gods ears. I'm just thinking back to the days before Google redeveloped the cold storage building. I know there was also the added catalyst of a new L stop, but look what happened to the neighborhood after that outdated building got some of that sweet, sweet G cash infused into it. I don't want to be greedy here, but what's the plan for the Clark and Lake stop? I know the external part of the station over Lake Street probably isn't being touched, but there were interior aspects IIRC. Not my stop, but from what I could tell going past, that sorely needed a refresh as well.

Congratulations on saving the Thompson Center, I’m sure this will turn out to be a great project.

It's unclear what the CTA areas will look like, but they will be retained. That was a condition of the sale.

I've also heard that Google is interested in maintaining the underground connection to City Hall and the rest of the Pedway system, which is good news.

Is there a main building permit working it's way through the city yet? One would think they would want to be ready on the new work as soon as the demo crew is out of there.

Well, this building will never be accused of being over-engineered. When the glazing is removed it looks like it was built with toothpicks.

I love the structure of this building. I wish they would keep the red, but if they just have more transparent windows in the front to show it off more that would be pretty cool too.

What are you talking about? The lattice structure that's currently being exposed is quite substantial, as it muat to be to hold a curtain wall for a massive atrium.

Perhaps your under the impression that these members should be as substantial as load bearing structural beams and columns used to hold up dozens of occupied floors of live load. Not sure why any engineer would spec such a thing for an atrium structure that only needs to hold itself up.
