This Julius Shulman photo is simply labeled "Job 4649: Parking garage, civic center, 1970". The State Building can be seen in the background.

Getty Research Institute

This is as close as I could get with GSV. The distinctive wall design is probably easier to see on the side facing N Hill Street. I had to go back to March 2014 to get the Googlemobile on this side of the street - by June 2014 the parking rate had doubled!

That wall panel is very interesting Hoss. I'm glad it survived. (are the panels on all four sides?)

& I love that top photo with the long gone State Building.

The attractive blonde standing over Ms. Granville is quite intriguing looking. It appears she doesn't have much make-up on (she's rather dark around the eyes)

She reminds me of some photographs of Jean Harlow, when she doesn't have a ton of theatrical make-up on.

For some vague reason (right, the hills/mountains are different), it reminds me of this, which was supposedly taken out Altadena way, and about fifty years earlier.

Here is a towering 'pre-stock market crash' building proposal that I found last night on eBay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/LA6-1929-Los...kAAOSwnNBXVKF0

"Architect's drawing of the Hancock Park Hotel, which will rise 40 stories high just outside the Los Angeles City Limits." [11/29/1929]

This is a very impressive proposal. I'd love to know what plot of land they were going to build it on.

That said, I didn't realize the Hancock Park area was outside the city limits in 1929. (perhaps they were just using the Hancock Park name for marketing purposes)

various stamps and information on the back

You might be onto something odinthor.

To see an especially LARGE photo of those people picking wild poppies go here:

The area was previously known as Las Flores by the Spanish for obvious reasons. You can see the electric rail line in the background

I just found this additional information:

"One field of poppies above Pasadena became a famous tourist attraction. Often referred to as the Altar Cloth of San Pasqual -- a reference to a revered 16th-century Spanish friar who knelt among wildflowers to pray -- the poppy field attracted photographers and sightseers for decades, and the Mt. Lowe Railway added a Poppyfields station where passengers could stop to collect bouquets."

I believe that this is the northern terminus of the 9 Line at Griffin Ave. & Montecito Drive, e_r.

Does anybody know anything about these townhomes in Westlake? I think they're really neat and they might become historically preserved now.

I checked out a few building permits for this block of Columbia Avenue, and they were all dated January 25th, 1923. Here's an example:

The location of these Julius Shulman images may be hard to track down. The title is simply "Job 122: Lot, 1947" - that's your LOT!

Here's an enlargement of the sign in case anyone can read it. The only address I could find for the Jack Tyre Glass Corp Ltd was in an office block in Long Beach. Beaudry, does it appear in the 1947 Telephone Directory that you used to find the Plyform Co?

Notice the man between the crates in the back row of this second picture. He seems to be packing/unpacking glass, which fits with the sign above.

Could this be a clue Hoss?

It looks like an air-raid siren on the roof of the building across the street.

If I remember correctly, there's a list of air-raid siren locations in the Los Angeles area, but I couldn't find it at the moment.

The story was that in Sept 1973 I took a room in the house at 3331 Blair Dr. That's up the hill off of Barham/Cahuenga. The development on the west side of Barham is Hollywood Manor, the east side is Hollywood Knolls. Tracts developed in the 20's, both were fairly advanced, with underground utilities, concrete lampposts etc.

Anyway, the house had as it's rear boundary the back lot of Universal. At that time it was just bare hills with a couple of roads running through. The studio mainly used this portion of the lot for Western locales. I recall going down to the fence, this was probably late '73, and seeing a young actor named Martin Sheen shooting a scene in a made for TV production called The Story of Pretty Boy Floyd. In '74 one night they burned a big cross on one of the hills, so I went down to the fence again, and the guy told me it was for The Night Stalker, a Darren McGavin series.

Sometime in early '74 the downtown Hollywood mock-up as pictured here appeared on the back lot hillside. As I remember it had already been publicized that Universal was making the picture, so we quickly surmised that this was for "Earthquake". Apparently rather than doing a process shot they wanted to have the real sky, and the houses/hills on the other side of the pass. If you see the film it came out pretty well.

In about 1980 it was announced that Universal was going to level these bucolic hillsides for a parking lot (paging Joni Mitchell). I was long gone from the house by then, it was owned at that time by Erin Moran, a television actress who was in a couple of '70s sit-coms. I followed the story in the Times, as the neighbors were up in arms about losing their view. But private property rights prevailed, and the parking lot was constructed.

OK, there's a tenuous noir connection to this story. The homeowner I rented the room from pointed out numerous odd outlets in the interior walls, not your normal electric outlets. He claimed these were hooked up to stenography machines back in the 1930's, due to, he said, the occupant at the time: none other than Erle Stanley Gardner, prolific pulp author and, of course, the creator of Perry Mason.

A few years later I got into the title insurance business, and tried to confirm this story. I checked our title plant (Transamerica Title at 3rd & La Cienega), but the plant had a gap in the '30's documents, and I found nothing with Gardner's name on it. Of course, he could have been a tenant, who merely rented the house, and never been on title at all.

So the Gardner story went unconfirmed all these years. Until now, thanks to the online permit resource, which turned up this May 1935 document:

So Erle Stanley Gardner did, in fact, own 3331 Blair Dr. in the 1930's.

And I confirmed from research that he did indeed compose by dictating to a team of secretaries. So the multiple steno outlets in the wall story fits.

Apparently the house was his principal residence only briefly, as by '37 he settled on a ranch in Temecula. Before he was in the Blair Dr. home he was in Ventura, where he practiced law prior to his career as an author.

Much thanks to Hoss for walking me through the process for copying and posting the bldg permits.
The grandfather of a friend of mine was once represented by Erle Stanley Gardner in a civil suit in Ventura

Interesting oldstuff. The building in Ventura where his office was located has been renamed the Erle Stanley Gardner Building.

That hanging thingy defeats me, though I'm sure I've seen something like it before. the Chinese used some truly bizarre weapons. Plus, he must have been a keen archer

Here's another photo of Mr. Gardner's writing den (in Temecula) that shows yet another mystery machine (and of course, the 'fondue-pot')

At first I thought the other man might be Pablo Picasso, but it tuns out it's R.B.H. Gradwohl, founder of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.

I was so fixated on the dictaphone machine I didn't even notice the arrows JMR, but you're correct in saying he was an avid archer.

Here's a photograph of Erle bow hunting at age 35. (a young looking 35 yr old I might add)

update:

Believe it or not, almost every item you see in the old photographs of Mr. Gardner's study have survived!

His writing den and all 1,500 items within, were reassembled in the Flawn Academic Center at the University of Texas. (holder of his papers)

http://www.hrc.utexas.edu/collection...gardner/study/

"Dictating equipment and other tools of the writer's trade such as an IBM Executary dictating machine and a Webcor "Regent" reel-to-reel tape recorder, both essential to Gardner's
method of working are visible."

The room was disassembled in 2010, and the items put in storage.

Interactive 360-degree panoramic view of the room here: (it's fun!)

I find a Jack Tyre, who was self employed. He registered for the WWII draft and gave a business address of 2039 E. 38th St., Los Angeles.

There is also a listing for Tyre Brothers Glass located at 3008 S. San Pedro in a 1933 directory

This slide dated 1958 was on eBay a month or so ago.
