Adams Avenue 2 Way

I work next to that street... My guess is before the end of the month judging by what I'm seeing...

Good eyes, bystander1. The water tower frame has been mounted to the concrete foundations. Looks like another balcony in the works in the middle of the alley.

Here are some old pics I took one Sunday night. They were in a folder I was about to delete because some didn't turn out too well, but I decided to post them anyway. Enjoy!

i may have missed them over the past year or so, but are there any renderings floating around depicting the final design of the alley?

does anyone find a water tower at ground level interesting, strange, or cool?

i think it poses potential for really interesting signage. i would love to see some conceptual drawings.

After I got done with my Geography exam last Friday I headed down to Panama City. I stopped in Prattville to eat and WOAH, what a difference only about 3 months makes! I got some cool shots of the skyline that I might post on here soon.

After I ate, I headed downtown, and it was AMAZING! Unfortunately, I didn't get to walk around much, cause I need to hurry up and get to Florida cause it was already getting dark. But, wow, it was really nice. It's looking a lot better than it used to.

I personally don't come to "Montgomery development news" for info and/or photos about other towns ... including Prattville. If the downtown and skyline that you mention are Montgomery's then I'm all for it.

So would it be best to create a "River Region development thread"?

Woah now, no need to get all irritated. Yea, the skyline was definitely Montgomery's. I wasn't aware that Prattville really had a skyline, of course, I've never been in downtown Prattville.

I'd like to think that all of the development threads on this forum that read things like "Huntsville Updates" or "Montgomery Development Thread" or "Mobile Development Thread" encompass the areas that surround them. So, as far as I'm concerned, if there's something going on in Prattville, I'm not going to hesitate to post it in the "Montgomery Development Thread".

As you shouldn't hesitate. It's one of those things where people refer to the region all as Montgomery. To people who aren't from the river region, Prattville, Montgomery, Wetumpka, and Pike Road are one and the same.

Thank you.

Sorry, OldCloverdale, I didn't mean to blow this out of proportion, it was silly to... I just also think it's senseless to exclude development in surrounding communities, simply because they are not a part of Montgomery Proper.

I'm beginning to realize that I'm making a much bigger deal out of this than it really is. So, I shall stop ranting.

The BHM guys created separate threads when discussing areas around BHM (e.g., "Suburban Birmingham | Part 1 | Trussville").

I thought this was kinda cool because it keyed me in right away that it was something I had no interest in.

But, I also recognized that others may care about those locations...

Strange set to attempt mayoral run

Montgomery County Commission Chairman Todd Strange announced his candidacy for mayor on Wednesday.

By Jill Nolin

Todd Strange has already raised about $100,000 for his attempt to become Montgomery's next mayor. He announced that he will run to replace Mayor Bobby Bright, who will step down next month to become congressman for the 2nd District, during an exclusive interview with the Montgomery Advertiser on Wednesday.

Strange, a successful businessman who started his second term as Montgomery County Commission chairman after running unopposed this year, said he believes he has the business and economic development experience the city of Montgomery needs right now.

"We can't run government like a business, but there are some principles that you can apply," Strange said Wednesday.

Strange is the former president, CEO and co-owner of the Blount Strange Automotive Group. He also once served as director of the Alabama Development Office where he was instrumental in recruiting Hyundai to the area.

Still, running to be the city's next mayor wasn't a decision he made lightly.

Strange said the first thing he did after learning of Bright's win on Nov. 4 was to visit his African-American friends in the business, religious and political communities and ask whether the black community could support him as a candidate.

"I have been very heartened by the support that has been there. (My) intention is to be a mayor for all of Montgomery," Strange said.

In those conversations with influential members of the African-American community, Strange said he has stressed that he wants the election to be about experience and record, not someone's ethnicity.

Strange said he wants to keep the campaign positive, which is one reason he hired the same team of people who worked with Bright during his congressional campaign. He said he wants his mayoral campaign to have the same tenor.

Although Strange's campaign won't officially start until January, he has already raised about $100,000. His plan is to raise about $600,000 for the election.

Strange is now one of only three candidates who have publicly declared their intention to run for the open seat. Michael Briddell, Bright's executive assistant and city spokesman, confirmed last week that he plans to be a candidate, and former mayoral candidate Scott Simmons has said all along that he plans to run. An e-mail sent to the Advertiser late Tuesday confirmed Simmons' candidacy.

Strange already is talking about what he believes are the four major issues facing the city -- the financial condition brought on by dwindling sales tax revenues, economic development, education and crime.

Here are some of the key actions he is supporting:

Taxes: He said the city should reduce the sales tax rate and replace that revenue by proportionately increasing the property tax, which would be a more stable revenue source.

"When you're depending on 50 percent of your revenues to come from the sales tax, that's a bit high. It ought to be down in the 30 percent range," Strange said.

Economic development: Strange said it is crucial that officials work diligently to get the economy going again so that more jobs are created. He said the city and county are currently working with companies that have an interest in coming to Montgomery.

Education: Strange said Montgomery public schools need to continue to develop programs, specifically thematic schools, for non-college track students. He also wants to see the school system explore pre-K programs and build on more reading and math initiatives.

Crime: Strange said the city needs to do more to make residents feel safe in their homes and when they go shopping in Montgomery. Having a stronger police presence would be a starting point.

Downtown development: Strange also said that continuing the work in downtown Montgomery, which has been a pet project for Bright, is also important to him.

"No great community can be successful without a vibrant downtown," he said, adding that the city should complete ongoing projects and seek out new ventures.

Bright plans to resign Jan. 5, which is the day before he will be sworn in to Congress. The City Council will meet after his resignation is tendered to begin the two-week qualifying period and set the date for the election.

Work continues on Alleyway Project despite review board's veto

By Ashley Hopkinson

The Alleyway Project -- the latest in a slew of downtown revitalization efforts -- got a thumbs-down from the Architectural Review Board regarding a request to modify a building in the historic district.

But a city planning department official said she was told the project will go on with or without the board's blessing.

A façade on a historic building on Commerce Street is already being modified -- but board member Brandon Brazil said this is the first time the group has been consulted about this issue or any of the changes to the historic district involving the creation of the new downtown entertainment district.

The board's mission is to preserve the architectural integrity of Montgomery historical districts, and is supposed to approve changes before construction begins, he said.

During the Wednesday night meeting, the board formally requested a complete set of building plans for the Alleyway Project, including the building in question at 130 Commerce St.

Brazil said the board is pleased with the work taking place downtown -- but wants to be included rather than excluded from the process.

"We want to be partners in it," said Brazil, who claimed the board has been left out of decisions involving the downtown buildings, and frustration is mounting.

"This is the first time we're seeing any of this," he said of the plans for the project.

Planning Department official Christy Anderson said she was told by Montgomery's director of planning and development Ken Groves that the board would not be consulted unless a resident made a complaint about the board's exclusion.

Anderson said a resident did make a complaint that "work was being done without review" by the board on the Commerce Street project, and that brought about the appearance before the board on Wednesday night.

"I have been told work will not stop regardless of what (the board) has to say," she said.

Brazil said the board doesn't want to come off like the "bad guys" but it does have an obligation to preserve the architectural character of historic districts.

The Rev. Willie Welch was the only member of the board who sided with the city about the Commerce Street modifications.

Welch said there was no need to put a stop on the work the city was doing.

"In order to preserve, I think we have to be flexible," Welch said. "I think this project is going to do more to help the district than to hurt the district."

Brazil said the city must abide by the same laws as everyone else.

"The ordinance reads that the city will abide (and) I would hope the city would back up, stop and follow the rules," he said.

Typically Brazil said once a building permit is requested in a historic district it is flagged for board approval before construction is allowed to take place.

Brazil refused comment on how the permits were received because the city has been cooperative in the past.

"I don't want to point any fingers," he said.

Brazil said he hopes the builders and the city will work in good faith in the future.

Thanks for posting those. We went down yesterday and they were just wrapping up the installation. Took a couple of shots with a friends Blackberry, but they do not compare with the MA photos you posted.

Things are progressing nicely down there...
