Just out of interest, what might you have preferred?

Good catch! Yeah you can see those drainage slots on the underside in some of the photos from mcminsen.

I would have preferred they use the space for max usage instead of it being a Apple Store vanity building.

This old design I loved the most

^^^^^^^^

^Yes, that's an impressive design. Personaly though, I find that it is a little too much in that it leaves no open space. For that reason and for the angle, which I find adds a 'dynmizing' feeling,
I like the current design, though I admit that the whole thing is not perfect.

as decent as it is, with the not-an-Apple-Store you know it will be quality and it leaves a decent amount of open space still.

also, we are literally the only city without a flagship Apple Store, and it was getting pretty sad.

Don't forget that Apple's internal design team dictates everything. While the street facing proposal provided more commercial space it does not align with their Reality Distortion Field.

Pics by me today:

**************

I didn't like that old design because it ignored the fact that the site was on a corner and essentially turned its back on Howe St.
by replacing the bad older retaining wall planter with a full 3 storey wall, making the pedestrian unfriendly environment there even worse.

The angle of the Apple design opened up the Howe St. side (removing the old retaining wall planter).

This was the Howe St. side of that old proposal:

Wow that was/is nice. Impressive street presence. And that balcony-Double Wow
However, as other have stated, the slanted entrance of the current design is nice purely from the perspective that it isn't the typical Vancouver cookie cutter format that has been done to redundancy in so many other instances. Guess we'll have to wait and see for the final product.

The roof at the Chicago store heats up to melt ice/snow (didn't work in this specific instance)

And maybe a similar drainage system

Quote:
The system is fairly clever in the lengths it goes to for visual purity. Rather than cluttering the edges of the roof with guttering, central drainage channels are built into the internal supports. Heating elements are intended to prevent snow and ice from forming on the flat surface, with the water draining away discreetly.

There is a hoarding across it now and it looks like there's work going on inside.

ok thanks. It's a good fit for the space, the Michael Kors was easy to forget it was even there.

Would have been absolutely genius if they built-in a large light-up Apple Logo right in the middle of that roof.
