Salt Lake metro becoming tech hub

The new Adobe Systems Inc. headquarters in Lehi on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012. Laura Seitz, Deseret News

By Jasen Lee, Deseret News

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/7...-tech-hub.html

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's technology sector continues to prosper, making Salt Lake City a prime location for many companies looking to join one of the area's top economic drivers.

The country's high-tech economy has grown at a rate nearly six times faster than the national average in other sectors, according to a report from commercial real estate firm CBRE. The growth is being driven mostly by increased demand for mobile, search, social and cloud computing software and service technologies, the report states...

I did something today that I hadn't done in at least 15 years. I took a walk through valley fair mall... My god! What the hell happens to that place?

I remember I use to love valley fair mall when I was little. I always loved going to valley fair mall over fashion place. It seems like the last time I went there some of the stores were closing.. And I knew the mall had gotten a bad reputation as being the ghetto mall.... But I had no idea it was that bad. I wish I hadn't even walked through the mall because it seriously kind of depressed me.. walking through remembering what is use to be and seeing what it is now. The worst thing was a lot of current stores still had Façades that were never changed from older stores that I remember well..

I saw the front of the mall and knew that the megaplex had recently opened and half expected it to be all renovated like what was done with fashion place... But wow! It looks like they have started a few remodeling projects over the years which have not been completed. A few of the smaller corridors looked as though they had laid down brick and had stores pillars.. Looked like it would have been nice if they would have completed it... But nothing was done with the ceiling and store fronts... Then there was the main main lobby area in front of the megaplex... They filled in the old sunken floor area and have a stamped concrete thing that looks ok but is once again ruined with the ceiling and dilapidated store fronts. The main corridors look horrible and have missing tile patched in with concrete... The food court looks like crap and the main eating area is blocked off... It was all dark and no work seemed to be going on.. Not sure if it was a remodeling project that they started and lost funding for or what..

SO MANY empty stores.. And a lot of the stores that are not empty look pretty ghetto. I can tell what a lot of the stores use to be.. It's like they all packed up and left and weird crap just moved in with out much updating... I really hope they are not done with this mall. They should really look at what fashion place did because that use to be the ghetto mall and its pretty amazing now.

I hope gateway in salt lake never gets that bad.. I would rather them just rip it down before letting that happen.

On the topic of malls... Does anyone know what is to become of the Sears location at fashion place??? Will it be demolished or do they have a new leaser... That is a pretty huge space to fill

There was an article a few pages back about the next phase of Valley Fair's renovation coming in 2013...I don't know what all that entails, but they're not done with it. At one point they were talking completely open-air, but I think thats no longer the case.

Sorry to disagree, but Fashion Place was never as Ghetto as Valley Fair. I was going to movies there in early 90's and it was ghetto then.

It seemd like it was pretty cool in the 80's and maybe early 90's... At least to someone my age at the time... All the stores were filled with known names... Fashion place always seemed boarding.... Crossroads will always be my mall of choice... I practically lived at the place during the summer.

Hopefully they'll post renderings soon, but there are several signs inside Valley Faire that say that the entire interior will be redone this summer... Hopefully the ghetto shops will disappear with the renovations... especially as the Valley Faire Megaplex has become our favorite premium theatre...

I thought it was kind of cool to see the game peddler still there. But man there was some weird stores in that place. It kind of reminded me of the ghetto mall they went to in the movie mallrats.. I wonder if they had a 3 nipple psychic.

I think Cinemark still has 2-3 years on their lease.. I wonder if they will renew it or close the second run theater... They do operate second run theaters close to first runs so it might stay open.. A remodel might help. I think JCP and Macy's could also use a remodel.

One thing I will say.. Valleyfair made me feel a lot better about gateway :-)

I don't know I think the valley fair mall has it figured out with the development around the mall they have a good selection of eateries, better than the gateway that's for sure. the food court inside the mall sucks but I don't eat there anyway. I also prefer the megaplex at valley fair than the one at the gateway. hopefully this summer some of those small crappy stores close down and the mall loses that swap meet feeling. I hardly ever go out there since I live in Rose Park but since the new megaplex opened I've been there twice this month.

That isn't a tough accomplishment. Megaplex 12 at gateway is not well maintained at all. Its by far LHM's worst maintained Megaplex... Which is interesting because its an extraordinarily high volume theater for its size.

Valleyfair has made some improvements outside of the mall.. As far as ghetto malls go though.. Gsteway is not even in the same ball park... I would put valleyfair in the same ballpark as the draper outlet mall.. Thats just me though... Ill go back to VF in 6 months and see if anything has changed..

actually its a huge accomplishment I moved out here 4 years ago and that mall was disgustingly in bad shape and I rarely would go out there and that new cinema has me going out there more often now. for a mall build in 1970 is doing a good job of getting back on track. it has long ways to go.

ajiuO, if you think Valley Fair Mall is bad now, you should've seen it 3 or 4 years ago. It's improved significantly since then, although it clearly still has a long ways to go.

At the very least it looks to be avoiding the fate of Cottonwood Mall (although I would say that the fact it's in a great location helps it a lot).

No.. I meant building a nicer megaplex then the one at gateway isn't tough.. As in the gateway megaplex is not all that nice.. I live a couple blocks from the place and find myself riding trax to century 16 or Jordan commons more and more often.. I will probably give the VF megaplex a try..
it's close proximity to trax... I wish they would have included a VIP theater like the one at JC..NICE!

I use to go to night flight at cottonwood when they were one of the only remaining stores.. And I must say. As empty as cottonwood was it still didn't seem as ghetto inside... But yes! If they can fix VF I'm all for it. I have some good memories there.. And I would love to see it make a come back... But I'm just being honest. Right now the place is depressing.

Petzl moving U.S. headquarters to West Valley City

Quote:
WEST VALLEY CITY — Petzl announced Wednesday the development of a new Utah-based manufacturing facility on Decker Lake Drive that will serve as the company's U.S. headquarters.

Petzl, which designs and manufactures tools to help people operate safely in vertical or dark environments, will invest more than $20 million in the company's new North American headquarters, according to a news release.

The company plans to construct an 80,000-square-foot facility and initially hire 50 employees, with the possibility to expand to 70 workers. The state-of-the-art facility will include 24,000 square feet for office space, 40,000 square feet for warehouse space and a 15,000 square foot training area, as well as a 60-foot indoor structure for product testing, climber training and rope-access professionals.

Am I wrong or are they just moving from Clearfield? If they are, it isn't a huge score for Utah, but I love that it is going to be within walkable distance (according to the official public announcement) of the Green TRAX line.

Yet another N. America Headquarters moving to Utah, because of the continued presence of the Outdoor Retailers Show. This is fantastic news.

They've started construction on the new Holladay Village. I was there during the holidays, and saw a lot of site work being done. I took some photos. There isn't much to see, but I'll try to post them some time.
