You'll be happy to know that the Cookstown (Hwy 89) McDonald's has been leveled and is never to return. It's being replaced by a modern enRoute service centre a few km to the north.

Yeah they might not be pretty but I'd rather have bland concrete barriers then going flying off the bridge after someone hits me on the ramp.

Therein summarizes the essence of Ontario's freeways.. safe, high quality, but ugly.

^ True. They even removed the green underbelly of the 403 ramps. Think they were green steel beams. Looked nice along with the green rails. Believe it's been that way since early 60's.

Found an old picture

For fun here's the after

Those stupid wooden posts Ontario still uses those on some parts of their highways as barriers. They look ridiculous.

I don't believe they are on the freeways, regular highways use them still though, yes. I don't think they install them new anymore though, metal ones are used. Municipal roads may still use them however..

The first two are obviously all that matters though. I personally like the aesthetic of the badass no messing around approach.

I wouldn't call them ugly, I would say they're utilitarian. More about function than form but not displeasing to the eye.

I was pleased that when they refurbished one of the overpasses on Hwy 400 that they kept and repaired the crest on the overpass as well. It is a nice detail that tends to be forgotten in modern construction.

More heritage aesthetics are planned for other Hwy 400 overpasses as they get placed as well. Between Toronto and Barrie, many of Hwy 400's structures are protected by Ontario's heritage legislation, so they get replaced they need to embody elements of the structures that they are replacing.

I have no idea what the final design will look like for some of these structures, but this is a screen capture taken from a pdf detailing proposed improvements along Hwy 400 through King Twp.

Just for fun, what if the Canadian highways were integrated into the US Interstate system:

And in the Golden Horseshoe -

I think you've got I-94 and I-96 reversed, since Highway 402 is a continuation of I-94.

Something I've been trying to do is figure out a way to replace Ontario's confusing County/Regional Road network with an expanded Secondary Highway network, such as what exists in almost every other province. There's no way to replace every single County Road, especially since many of them are urban arterials that nobody refers to by number (e.g., Dixie Road)

Good catch - but I did that on purpose. I initially had that as you've described, but then decided to keep the 401 as a continuous route with a single designation. So, I rechristened the section of I-94 between Detroit and Port Huron as I-96 and made I-96 the name for 402/403 (west section ) /407 to maximize the distance at which I-96 would run to the north of I-94 (401).

I was really just curious as to what it might look like, given that many of the Ontario/Quebec freeways align with the Interstate system, even if I had to take some liberties with the Interstate numbering scheme.

Fixed it - not sure why that didn't work the first time. Hope it is there now.
