pretty cool article from Roy Johnson on al.com:

How the USFL came to Birmingham, and almost didn’t

i had wondered what the timeline was in terms of who contacted who first, and when.

really excited for this. 20th street has the opportunity to become a really great pedestrian experience, especially once projects like 20 Midtown, The Frank and the future development of Stivers Auto come online, adding thousands more residents to the area.

High-tech passenger terminals planned for BRT project

New information technology systems and passenger information display systems will be added to the Birmingham Xpress Bus Rapid Transit system.

Jan. 18 Birmingham City Council approved an agreement between Mayor Randall Woodfin and the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority to purchase and install the new systems at the BRT’s two transit centers and 32 transit stations.

“This will allow passengers to have a streamlined experience for monitoring headways and routes, purchasing tickets, marketing, and other informational displays,” the city said in a statement.

THE CITIZEN

this one has been interesting to watch go up. looks like the exterior is made from prefabricated panels, which is a method i've been seeing a lot in my work as a healthcare architect as well. you can see a few of them stacked horizontally above the fence line in the pic below. installation goes much faster, and quality is easier to control since they are produced in a factory and not on site.

wow... could be a big project. this thing would be RIGHT up against the insterstate (former Sherman Industries site):

Joint venture seeking rezoning for proposed development in Parkside

A mixed-use development for the Parkside district is going before city leaders with a rezoning request.

The Birmingham City Council Planning and Zoning Committee will meet Jan. 26 discuss a new zoning proposal for the proposed development.

The application requests that the property located at 1028 and 1100 Second Ave. S. be changed from M-2, a heavy industrial district, to MU-D or mixed-use downtown district.

The request was made to allow for a mixed-use development, including multifamily residential, hotel, retail and outdoor space to occupy the location.

AGL Properties LLC is proposing to develop approximately 300 multifamily residential units, a 130-key hotel, 23,000 square feet of retail space and a 20,000-square-foot plaza dedicated to outdoor, open space, and parking deck for residents and visitors.

According to the committee’s agenda, the property at 1028 is situated on approximately 1 acre of land south of the Denham Building and to the west of the former Sherman Industries plant, both of which are zoned for mixed-used downtown district.

Clay Smith of Kimley-Horn consulting firm filed the application on behalf of the property owner, AGL Properties LLC. The entity is owned by Andrew Linn Jr., president of Southland Transportation Group.

The mixed-used development is a joint venture between the Dobbins Group, a local real estate investment firm, and Residential Ventures. We previously reported the Denver-based real estate firm Residential Ventures purchased the former site of Sherman Industries concrete plant at 1130 Second Ave. S.

According to city documents, the proposed hotel component will be constructed along 12th Street South. Residential Ventures had previously owned the subject property in 2020. The new development calls for both the 1028 and 1130 properties to be resurveyed into one lot.

According to the proposal, landscape and hardscape improvements will be designed to preserve the existing Sherman concrete silos and an above-ground pond. Additionally, on-street parking, a buffered bicycle lane, and a mid-block pedestrian crossing zone is proposed along 12th Street South to connect this development with the Urban Supply District development.

The Five Points South Neighborhood Association, Zoning Advisory Committee, and Planning and Zoning Committee staff all voted to recommend the request be approved.

no, this seems like a unanimous no-brainer. nothing in parkside makes sense as industrial anymore. this should just be a formality.

I did hear our Mayor and City Council are now on the same page and that should pay dividends for our city if they keep it up.

looks like Alamo Drafthouse / Cinema will be the anchor tenant for the Powell Avenue Steam Plant.

i've never been, but this seems like a pretty good "get"... hoping that space out front doesn't stay a giant parking lot though.

(edit: Birmingham is listed as "Coming Soon" on their website: https://drafthouse.com/)

It is not suppose to, they are looking at a Luxury apartment complex and a high end hotel but there was no time table set for that project.

glad to see something going in this prominent location... although barely two blocks from Trim Tab.

North Carolina’s Hi-Wire Brewing announces Alabama location

Hi-Wire Brewing, an Asheville, North Carolina-based craft brewer, has announced it will expand operations into Alabama with a new location in Birmingham.

Hi-Wire Brewing will be the anchor tenant of Lakeview Green, a newly built mixed-use development in the city’s Lakeview District. Martin Smith and Michael Byrne of SRS Real Estate Partners represented Lakeview Green in the leasing of space to Hi-Wire Brewing, according to a press release.

The 8,887 square-foot taproom will occupy a corner space in the development’s main building on the corner of 4th Avenue South and 29th Street South. The brewery is planning to open a 24-tap bar with neon decor, family friendly games, and communal seating with space for more than 300 people.

Set to open in late summer, Hi-Wire Brewing’s Birmingham taproom will be the third location the brewer will open in 2022 and will join Hi-Wire’s growing roster of taprooms. The brewery is currently expanding its Biltmore Village Production and South Slope Specialty breweries in Asheville. In addition to Alabama, two other locations are scheduled to open this year-- one in Charlotte, N.C., in the spring and Cincinnati near the end of 2022. Hi-Wire’s out of state taprooms include Knoxville, Tenn. and Louisville, Ky.

In a separate press release on Craft Brewing Business, the owners of Hi-Wire Brewing explained some of the reasons for their decision to expand to Birmingham, including their relationship with alcohol wholesaler Alabama Crown.

“Alabama is already a high-growth market for us, so we see a lot of potential to really keep it going,” High-Wire brewing co-owner Chris Frosaker said in the same press release. “Plus the city really is just blossoming, and we want to be part of it.”

BRT Boarding Stations on 5th Ave S and 18th St S:

the western end seems to be progressing faster than the eastern end. still no stations up on 1st Ave N, although i imagine it won't be long.

they are really flying now at City Walk BHAM, including working weekends (saw crews out there on Sunday).

hard to get good pics with fencing still up. the most progress has occurred on the western end, with the eastern end (stadium side) following behind.

the City Walk BHAM site has the best photo updates, but here are a few i took today:
