I remember there being a proposal to build a guitar shaped office or residential building in Nashville that people gawked at. Now, I know that the developer was lacking in credibility, but many just laughed at the idea of there being a guitar shaped building in Nashville. I actually thought if done right it would be a very iconic building for Nashville. So, Hard Rock is building this hotel in southern Florida. It appears to be about 30-35 stories.

Just imagine the impact this would have on the Nashville skyline. Especially if the neck and head of the guitar were added to include an observation tower. The neck could be an elevator with the cars going up and down the strings. The head could have been multi-levels to include a bar, restaurant, reserved special event space and of course an observation level.




Everyone I know that has seen this has asked why not in Nashville?

I think it looks incredibly tacky and corny and I am glad it wasn't built in Nashville, myself. It would be like a developer building an apple shaped building in New York.

I was just at the Hard Rock last weekend. Everyone has an opinion; however, there is nothing tacky about the new building being constructed. It looks quite nice and iconic.

I have to agree that this building would be awful in Nashville. It would contribute to the attitude that many people have about the South, country music, and the culture down here which is that we're uneducated hillbillies with no class. But the fact is that Nashville is an oasis of much more progressive attitudes than we see elsewhere in this part of the country and I would hope that would include a bit more sophistication when it comes to architecture.

Not guitar shaped (could be an upside down washtub bass, though), but Adam Sichko of the Business Journal tweets that the Greystar Apartments in the one and only, original Gulch have been fully financed and will begin construction immediately.

^I like the look of that building overall, but the ground level fronting the street leaves MUCH to be desired.

^^ Yes, with all the incredible foot traffic and street activation just around the corner on 11th, it's amazing how dead, in contrast, Division Street is. A block or so to the east, the Pour House is/has closed, but the Party Fowl is thriving so hopefully, it will turn around.

Creating space at the street level can create commercial opportunities. However, if overdone, it can create a look of being a dead zone. I've been to cities all over this country that have tons of empty space at the street level. Which makes the area look a bit unappealing. So many times you'll see unfinished empty spaces or the developer will try to put some tacky film on the window announcing some type of retail or dinning to come. If the developer really isn't interested in leasing out space to other businesses then they probably should just try to develop a street level that has a bit more openness to the facilities on the ground floor. One trend that I've been noticing for a couple of years now is to allow banks to set-up ATM lobbies in street level spaces. This gives a bank the opportunity to have a presence without having to set-up a full operation. I generally feel safer using them because not only do they have cameras on the ATM machines, there are typically multiple cameras around. Also, some are set up to where you have to swipe your card to enter, the door locks after you enter and no one else can enter until you exit. It also minimizes scammers from tampering with the machines card readers.

Pop-up stores are also becoming popular at the street level. These are spaces that are small in scale, some no bigger than a kiosk in a mall. Companies use them to promote a product or service only. For instance, Peloton has a space in NYC near Times Square that is a pop-up location. They have a couple of bikes, video screen, and a chair for the salesperson. It's really no bigger than the average window you see for a small store.

No link yet, but NASHVILLE POST is reporting an APPLE flagship store will indeed be going in the corner of the Fifth and Broad development. It will be a premier location easily accessible to the 14 million tourists who visit Nashville every year. No renderings yet.

The Apple flagship store would be in the lower right hand corner in the large rendering and prominent in the lower left picture.

This is an older rendering. The buildings shown are now way past the halfway point.

The hotel being developed by Flank Inc. from NYC in Nashville's Gulch has been downsized in height (from 21 to 16) but upsized in the number of hotel rooms. It will be called the 1100 Porter Hotel and will have no parking. NASHVILLE POST.

The overall designed has been changed and the copious amounts of vegetation included on the façade is no longer needed as the developer is no longer seeking extra allowance for height.



No word on a start date.

We had quite the storm front come though Friday. It was a Derecho according to the weather bureau.
David Howe took a spectacular photo of the approaching storm.

From The TENNESSEAN....

It looks like some serious investors will likely kick-start the large River North project located on the East Bank of the Cumberland River about a mile north of downtown. The development is a 100+ acre piece of property of which the southern 40 acres have been labeled 'The Landings' and is targeted for the first few phases of development.

Major developers, MRP Realty and Creek Lane Capital, have focused on a 13 acre portion of the Landings on the side of the river for the first part of the development. It is expected to begin in 2020.



The first renderings showed a dense high-rise urban district being proposed, possibly as Amazon HQ2 bait. But the latest renderings show a low-rise, mixed-use development with access to the river and a proposed pedestrian bridge.

If you're ever in Washington, DC go over to the area called District Wharf and you'll experience the vision that the developers have for the Landings at River North. One of the developers was heavily involved in the District Wharf project. Just looking at what they are developing Nashville made me immediately think about District Wharf in DC. Here's a link to the District Wharf website.

They've created a really nice atmosphere and vibe. I truly hope the Nashville project will be equally as successful. I can see them also providing water taxis between Riverfront Park and the Landings.

Yep. The Wharf and area around Nationals Park are one of my favourite places in DC. Sure, there's no history there, everything is new but the density is just right(8-14ish stories tall) and there is ample shopping/eating and feels incredibly safe.
