AC + ELEMENT HOTEL BY MARRIOTT
The Brown Marx Building is located at 2008 1st Ave. North in Birmingham, Alabama, and was originally constructed in 1906. It is a masonry clad steel frame structure located on what is designated as the “Heaviest Corner on Earth.” The building includes a basement + 16-stories + a rooftop penthouse addition. The renovation/conversation of this historic office building will be updated to a dual-branded hotel, AC + Element by Marriott. In addition to 232 guestrooms, amenities will include Lobby areas with dining/seating/bar, 3,700 sq ft of meeting spaces, 1,200 sq ft fitness center, and guest laundry.

COMPLETION: Winter 2022

I have no doubt that the reason we're seeing so many quality hotel developments is due to the World Games. Investor confidence seems to be high, I just wonder how much more of this we can expect. The answer might just be until all of the abandoned prewar buildings are fully renovated and occupied. Sadly, I think that probably means few prospects for new highrises in downtown in the near term, but meh, I'm pretty satisfied with our skyline.

It's got to be more than that. Such a huge investment for just one event? The potential of the improved BJVC and Protective stadium probably have more to do with it.

Yes you are correct. So far Birmingham has landed the International Police and Fireman's games, at least 2 first round NCAA men's basketball tournaments and 1 women's tournament in the next 3 or 4 years. I can't recall some of the others.

from the news section of https://citywalkbham.com/news/... looks like a portion of CityWalkBHM will be complete for the World Games, but not all of it:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 1, 2021
MEDIA ADVISORY

Construction Commences on City Walk BHAM
Birmingham’s newest destination will transform the area within the I-59/20 corridor into an environment that connects the city like never before.

BIRMINGHAM – The recent completion of Birmingham’s I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) Interstate bridges brings about renewed focus on the space underneath the bridges known as City Walk BHAM. City Walk BHAM is a 31-acre project, which will span 10 city blocks, from 15th Street North to 25th Street North – almost a mile in length – and will include recreational, art, performance, sports and green spaces; a skate park facility; market areas; a dog park and more. View the master plan here: https://citywalkbham.com/masterplan/.

Brasfield and Gorrie, LLC, one of the nation’s largest privately held construction firms, is the contractor working on this project. As the Official Construction Partner of The World Games 2022, Brasfield and Gorrie is committed to finishing a portion of City Walk BHAM prior to The World Games 2022, which will take place next July, and will be deploying three crews to work to meet the accelerated timeline. The total project is scheduled for completion in 425 days.

Once the project is complete, daily operations and facility maintenance will be managed by BJCC. “The BJCC is proud to partner with ALDOT to assume ongoing operations and maintenance of City Walk BHAM upon its completion,” said Tad Snider, executive director and CEO, BJCC Authority. “It’s a natural fit for the BJCC, not just because of proximity, but because our team has key experience managing this sort of multi-attraction destination. We’re excited to see it taking shape all around us, and we look forward to welcoming visitors to City Walk BHAM later next year,” Snider said.

“It’s a remarkable time for our city, with the upcoming completion of Protective Stadium and the modernization of Legacy Arena. City Walk BHAM will be the third major attraction to come online on or around our complex in a twelve-month period,” said Dennis Lathem, chairman, BJCC board of directors. “City Walk BHAM is a perfect complement to the BJCC’s family of facilities, particularly the Uptown entertainment district.”

During the construction period, motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this Construction Operation.

ALDOT’s mission is to provide a safe, efficient, environmentally sound transportation network across Alabama. For further information, visitwww.dot.state.al.us.

Who knows, the bridges themselves were completed in record time. Who's to say that can't happen with CityWalk? I'm not holding my breath, though...

A large fence with black meshing has be erected around Jefferson County's Cooper Green Hospital's parking deck.
In large white lettering "Coming Soon New Cooper Green Hospital" on the 6th Avenue and 14th Street South sides.

The actual arena itself looks really nice. Nothing like that dark and dated feeling it use to have.

from the article, the scoreboard is being "upgraded" (but not replaced from what i can tell)
