Wow. Calgary has such a dense downtown core. I haven't been to Calgary in person, but wandering around in Google Street View the urban core is denser than bigger cities such as Dallas (I have been to Dallas in person but wasn't overwhelmed by the city).

In some ways the Calgary urban core reminds me of downtown Chicago.

Calgary was very impressive at street level, felt close to Toronto for oomph (though when I visited there was a festival going on or something).

Yes, Calgary has, from a skyscraper perspective, a very impressive skyline for a city its size, and although not as big as Toronto/Chicago....still being mentioned as a comparison shows its strength. However, on the street level, Calgary just doesn't have the density of people or activity on street level needed to be compared to such other large cities. Chicago (at least in areas i have visited) just feels far "grander".

Calgary is impressive, but is nowhere near Toronto and Chicago, not even close!

I haven't been to Calgary, but I have been to Chicago several times and I live in the GTA so my opinion is just based on Google Street View. In terms of downtown leased office space Toronto has 73.4 million square feet of office space and Calgary has 42.2 million square feet - http://www.jll.ca/canada/en-ca/Research/CAN-Office-Market-Overview-Canada-Q3-2016-JLL.pdf . However, one thing that Calgary might be missing is the large quantity of residential towers that Toronto has in the downtown core which results in a lot people living downtown and results in a vibrant downtown core.

It would be interesting to know how many highrises over 12 stories are in Calgary versus Toronto. Both cities have fairly narrow city streets with many urban canyons, which gives a big city feel. Certainly the average height would be more in Toronto, but at street level the urban canyons make a city look big not so much the tower heights (just my opinion). In any case, I hope to get a chance to visit Calgary sometime, I have had family members live there and they liked the city.

Like I said, there was some sort of festival going on when I visited, so that made it more bustling.

Phew! Thank god you cleared that up. I mean, the number of people saying Calgary was, in fact, identical to Toronto and Chicago was overwhelming.

I know right! It's so annoying. Calgary is clearly far greater than them.

Few from Calgary would dare make such claims (aside from the most extreme boosters), but to the poster's point: the density is definitely there. Downtown Calgary has some of the densest office blocks in the country. We're a far cry from thirty years ago, when the core looks a lot like that infamous picture of Houston -- covered in parking lots. It's actually become somewhat problematic, as the intense shadowing and wind tunnels make downtown rather cold and dark.

Downtown Calgary is still somewhat bland and corporate, but the number of amenities built recently, or under way are going a long way to change that.

I was in Calgary last week. The skyline in no way is comparable to Toronto or Chicago, but that being said, Brookfield and The Bow from behind look fantastic. Unfortunately I wasn't able to snap any pictures, but I did appreciate in person the look of those two on the skyline.

Calgary's Skyline is more Comparable to Philadelphia's in the US.
