Yeah, it may do that. It would be very funny but great if CPS could pick up the GEMS building (K-8 and/or HS buildings) on a fire sale. I hope they're kicking the tires on it as the Loop has no public neighborhood school and only charters or private schools.

South Loop and Ogden are just too far for any families in the Loop proper, which is part of the reason why there aren't many such families in the first place. Everyone knows there's a problem but it's politically too hard to spend money on well-off downtown families when the South and West Sides are struggling... but a vacant school building up for sale could force the issue.

That's good news. . . the "sun's out, guns out" trope would be a fine thing to bury. . . I've noticed a lot less general riff-raff around as well - which I attribute to drug dealing and all the cottage industries that revolve around it (panhandling). . . so perhaps there's a more concerted effort to crack down on that type of behavior. . . I dunno. . . I also don't spend a whole lot of time in areas that are hard hit with gun violence such as the south and west sides, so take my anecdotal observation for what it is. . .

Anyone know what's being proposed at 4404-4414 S. Greenwood Avenue? There is a map amendment notice posted on the property. Thanks

Does anyone know what’s going in the space where the Under Armour store used to be? It looks like something is happening with the scaffolding going up.

Oh cool. Should be a popular spot for shopping when it’s open. Would’ve liked to see a Nintendo store/pokemon/super Mario store open up there instead.

Looks like the James Beard Award will be held in Chicago this year, the first time it is being held outside of NYC

^ Wow, I'm kinda surprised there has been no discussion of this since I posted it. This is pretty great news for Chicago, and if there were any doubts that our city is a global center for cuisine, this news pretty much eliminates that.

That is pretty huge, given that the Beard Awards are like the academy awards for foodies. It may signal their desire to seem less New York centric, as that could undermine their credibility. It was interesting that when Melman (Lettuce Entertain You) won the Beard award for Best Restauranteur a few years ago, he wasn't even at the ceremony. When asked why he didn't go, he replied he didn't think they would ever give that award to anyone not from NY. Great to see them come to Chicago, although I can't see it being a permanent move.

With Michelin, Zagat and AAA diamond awards, Beard is not the only game in the culinary world.

We're not doing a gun rights debate in this thread.

Take your axe-grinding bullshit elsewhere.

See Scores of Unbuilt Frank Lloyd Wright Structures That Have Been Computer-Rendered With Incredible Realism

Of the more than 1,000 structures that the celebrated American architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed, more than half were unbuilt—or worse, demolished—by the time of his death in 1959 at the age of 91.

But now, Spanish architect David Romero has collaborated with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to show how those projects might have looked today. The new renderings include the Gordon Strong Automobile Objective, a planetarium proposed in 1925, as well as the National Life Insurance building, the floating cabins of Summer Colony on Lake Tahoe, and his most famous unrealized structure, a mile-high skyscraper in Chicago known as the Illinois.

Chicago has been one of the SLOWEST growing cities in the countries for years now. Not enough people coming in to fill in the absolute dissolution of the south/west sides. The city's population probably increased more in these past 2-3 years with these migrants than it had the past 10 years.

Turn Englewood into Little Venuzuela. Crime will go down too. Chicago could use more tasty venzuelan restaurants too.
The difference between Chicago and all the other rust belt cities of the Midwest is that Hispanics established a large community here and nowhere else.

It would have been such a disaster to miss out on Mexican migration just because they weren’t the idealized immigrants of their era and a lot of them needed government services. A half-abandoned Chicago would have been heartbreaking.

Twiddling our thumbs and hoping for some surge in new white or black residents is a fool’s errand. The non-immigrant population of both has already peaked in the U.S., and their state and city migration habits are mostly set in stone.

Most of the Venezuelans aren’t uneducated subsistence farmers with zero skills. A lot of them had normal lives as shopkeepers, accountants, artists and other regular city jobs before their country collapsed

While most of the rust belt largely missed out on "the great Mexican migration", Chicago wasn't the only such city to benefit.

Milwaukee proper is roughly 20% Latino (~3/4 of which are of Mexican ancestry) as of 2020, which isn't that far behind Chicago, and considerably higher than its peers.

I mean, the Mexicans of Milwaukee even got their own sausage (chorizo) included in the sausage races at Miller Park, which is of course the hallmark signifier that your ethnic group has officially arrived.
