You should really visit, as Burnaby is really where all the megaprojects are currently at. So many great things happening right now in here and people actually live in all these new towers.

It's the proposal to put everything at grade with level railway crossings -
ditching the previous proposal's overpasses, separation of modes and elevated waterfront promenade in favour of at-grade park space.

Also funny that the kinds of "malls" that they are removing are exactly the kinds of low density single-storey malls that I like to see go. I'm glad they are proposing a lot more mixed-development urban structures that are not at all OV-esque: where buildings include office, hotel, institutional as well as retail elements. The suburbs are going to be very "Vin-friendly" in the near future. I'm a happy camper.

Putting everything at grade seems like a big mistake to me though.

Also, I am sure the Maple Ridge project will change a lot from that preliminary render if it ever gets built (Maple Ridge has a Kelowna style curse on it, every new tower that is proposed never seems to move ahead).

There are pedestrian overpasses by the River Market and at 4th Street, as well as overpasses next to New West Station and matching up with 3rd Avenue. So while putting everything new at grade isn't ideal, it isn't the end of the world either.

I'm wondering with all the waterfront development in New West if anybody is planning on putting in a water taxi service. Someone would have to do the numbers, but I could see it as a viable commuting option for the people who live in high-density developments that aren't that close to Skytrain. If though the boats aren't fast, they would be pretty efficient since they don't get stuck in traffic.

Nothing is the end of the world when it comes to poor civic planning, but seeing how that had a plan to do so before hand it just makes sense to built it right the first time. Ne need to have more at grade rail crossings (especially such a busy rail corridor as that).

IMO covering the railways would have saved the nearby residents from the constant train honking. Instead... expect to see more petitions to limit trainyard noise now that we are going with the cheaper at-grade option...

At this point, New West has really put themselves in a bind... because there is no way they will be able to cover the railways unless the nearby railroad bridge and yard were both moved to accommodate the grade... and we all know what the probability of both are!

Nice map. Actually looks quite feasible as a tourist/recreational scheme. Little tugboat or log boom rustling ferries. I don't know about the utility for commuting as there is limited employment down there.

Thanks for making me think about this . . . it looks like a good alternative to the Queesborough pedestrian bridge.
