Speaking of very, very, very ugly buildings... Is construction ongoing? Can someone post a recent picture of the progress (if there has been any)?

It might be an ugly building, but that spot will be stellar!

For one thing, it's the only place in the market that you don't have to look at it.

Looking inside through the windows, I have serious doubts they can open in 3 or 4 months.

I honestly think there is nothing wrong with the Marriott.

How about the surface parking lot on George and the complete dead space it creates on York for a start?

The parking is small so its not an issue. It also opens up the corner.

What about the multi level city parking smack in the middle of the market? That is a real real problem. And to say that they are renovating it!

I can't stand it. It's butt ugly and i find its style and structure offensive. The wrecking ball can't get there soon enough. Heck, I'd rather have another Handaz/Claridge than this poor excuse of a hotel.

I agree about the city multi level parking lot, it should absolutely be removed, but that doesn't forgive the actually quite large Marriott surface parking lot. That corner doesn't need to be 'opened up,' there are very large sidewalks and parking lagoons (another problem) on the south side of the street.

IMO, Marriott, parking and building, is the biggest eyesore in the Market. Even beats out the Andaz.

The City of Ottawa lot across Heart and Crown is my favourite in the area. Awesome views from the top. Inoffensive architecture. Even has retail space.

I do however, hope that within 20 years, all parking will be placed underground so that the central site of the lot can be used for something of a modern Market Building or other community use. Space for residential/hotel/office would also be welcome. We would also be able to make the Market pedestrian only (between York, St-Patrick, Dalhousie and Sussex).

Photo taken on March 19, 2016.

This is one HUGE disappointment. The building is ugly, offers nothing to the city or its surroundings, and imo, is a worse eyesore than the old Union building.

They are renovating it because it has been found to be structurally unsound. I was panicking when I heard about the renovation, but it makes sense if it's unsafe, as the future plans to dig it out are a few years away at least.

I recommend New Look Eyewear at the Trainyards. My Fiancee was able to find excellent glasses there that really changed her life.

Why 20 years why not now? I think that should go for all above ground parking downtown. Going with underground parking and mix use building above.

Agree with Marriott comment

This Claridge building vaguely reminds of the Vehicle Assembly Building at Cape Canaveral. And that's not a good thing.
