solar decathlon: astonyshine solar house
students from france's école nationale supérieure d’architecture paris-malaquais and école des ponts paristech joined forces with italy's polytechnic of bari and university of ferrara to produce 'astonyshine', a prototypical house for the solar decathlon europe taking place in madrid, spain in september of 2012. exploring the classical aesthetic of stone masonry, this home reintroduces the historic building material for its low technology thermal qualities. when quarried within 1000 kilometers from the site, benefits include its minimal toxicity risk, ability for downcycling and recylcing as well as reduced air and water pollution during construction. perfect for warm climates, thick perimeter walls will still provide proper insulation while self-ventilating as it is more permeable than concrete.

coleman-davis pagan arquitectos: casa mar
san juan-based coleman-davis pagan arquitectos have recently completed 'casa mar', an ocean-front residence in san juan, puerto rico. buffering from the adjacent beach, the habitable spaces of this residential building are interconnected with a linear staircase, focusing attention to the water. three flights of stairs are housed within a terracotta-tinted, cast-in-place sculptural concrete volume pierced with skylights and frame windows, permeating the the space with soft natural daylight. double height spaces allow diagonal views through the rooms celebrating the view as the focus of the space. the program is elevated from ground level to buffer from the frequented public beach and protect from possible hurricanes and storm surges.
