As remarkable as the progress is with Stantec and the JW... no snow on the ground in February in Edmonton?

What?

488 University Update by Blogto

Full Storey

Quote:
Once a 1968 office tower, 480 University Ave. has been reinforced and given a new shell, which paves the way for the construction of a 37 storey condo atop the existing structure. When complete, its new address will be 488 University.

Wow! That is a great update!

One thing I gotta say is that I hope that middle brick building is kept free from demolition...it provides a really good focal point/reinforcement to the area that you're in an established neighbourhood/downtown.

Even if that building were to be redeveloped, I'd hope it'd be done to keep the original structure fairly intact design-wise. What it looks like now is sad, all windows boarded up in that stupid blue.

Incredible shot and yes, that brick building should be kept and converted into lofts with the lot to the north (both owned by Katz as well) developed into a tower.

Still seems crazy to me that the new outer supports can hold up a 37 storey concrete formed tower.

Kudos Jeff on that shot, great capture.

Brick building will be there, my guess is facade only. Proposal sooner rather than later

It's not just them. There's also the concrete office tower core.

Is there a closeup of Stantec's glass? Looks like the new Ernst & Young in Toronto or MNP in Vancouver.

If you read the UT article the entire weight is being transfered to the new steel frame that they are calling a table top which I said over a year ago you argued with. It's not being attached to the core.

I don't recall where I read the core will be supporting some of the weight but, it wasn't just some UT article. Originally, I was the under the impression the whole load with be transferred to the exterior columns.

From an engineering perspective, it would make sense some elements of the concrete core(s) of the original building will move up with the new tower.

On the flip side, I understand they are building a steel frame elevator core on the outside it would make sense they wouldn't need to extend any of the concrete structure. However, if that elevator is only going to a skylobby, then I guess they would have to extend some portions of the office building up with the addition.

Not move up. Rest on top of the existing core Yeah, The new express elevators to the sky lobby are being built on the north side of the building so it would just be a matter of extending a few columns to the new transfer slab.
