I find the scale extremely appealing and fine grained, with just the right amount of density and green space, without feeling too congested.
Shhh!!! I'm trying to keep this place a secret!

Haha! Your secret's safe with me. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that the cat is already out of the bag. Seriously, though, I wish that developments like Post Riverside and Glenwood Park could be duplicated on a massive scale all throughout the Beltline and throughout intown. I think that this is the sort of density that Atlanta should strive for, going forward, and I think that it suits the city beautifully. I can imagine an Atlanta where this is the norm, instead of the exception.

I think that this is the standard uniform look that Atlanta should be going for. If executed well, it could truly give the city some of the identity that a lot of people say that its' lacking.

^You posted two pictures of where I live.
Some Post properties are pretty good, but a lot are just gated suburban style (Post Briarcliff, Post Brookhaven, etc). The best ones (Post Parkside, Post Biltmore) are great steps in the right direction, but often lack ground-floor retail and still have visible parking garages.

Some of the condo/apt buildings on Ponce in Decatur and in Midtown West (10side, etc) are perfect examples of the type of infill I'd like to see all over Atlanta. Built right up to the street, hidden parking, and full of ground-floor retail.

How is Va-Hi the meeting grounds for Tech and Emory? I don't get the Va-Hi hype, it's fucking boring and repetitive for the most part. Where do you go out in West Midtown, to a nursing home? There are lots of Tech people out here.

Besides, I'm 27 (essentially beating 30's door down) and if you ever called me a part of the "early bird special" crowd, I would knock your little ass out cold. It'd be worth the trip to Rice Street.

That area is perfect to set up a bunch of superclubs and late night places catering to whoever in the hell cares because it's on Cheshire Bridge (could be Atl's "Meatpacking District"). They should extend last call to 3:30 there and close at 4:00 (or later). There isn't as high of a concentration of residents there and there is already a 1.5 mile strip of clubs (most of them sketchy as hell). The gay clubs are over there and some of the largest black clubs are over there and there are several 24 hour dining establishments there, too.
The last time Atlanta tried this idea, the club area, Buckhead was shut down to build the 'Streets of Buckhead' (Starting up real soon!) and the closing hours in Atlanta were rescinded to 2A. If you tried this again in the Cheshire area, I'm worried that it might be shut down just to build the 'Streets of Bangladesh' and clubs/bars would have to close at noon.

The Atlantic Station connectivity to Tech and Home Park is pretty moronic.

The trick is to go down (west) on 14th and take the next right after State, you can then make the first left and head into the complex. It is insanely stupid that you cannot take State Street into AS. It isn't like added traffic or speed should really be an issue, when I'm late to class, I routinely hit 40 on State and I've never had problems.

I agree with the other posters, they need some more legitimate local bars/restaurants. I can eat most of that crap at Lenox or right down from my house.

I've never had a problem there but I'm seldom there late night except for the occasional movie. I'm quite certain it isn't close to a country mile to some of the field parties I've been to.

Yea, I'm in total agreement with you. West Midtown has some excellent infill. I would like to see a mix of the more traditional architecture used in Post Parkside and Post Riverside with the more modern stuff going up on the Westside. I think Atlanta is stepping in the right direction. There just need to be even more density and it needs to be of the quality that we both discussed.

I agree with the desire for a more densely-built Atlanta, but I hope that everyone realizes the huge strides that the city has made over the past couple of decades. Atlanta has added an amazing amount of density and seems to be headed in the right direction. Sure, Glenwood Park and other large developments are awesome and can really change the built environment, but all of the single infill projects that have been built since the early 90's add up as well. The economy really sidetracked a lot of additional plans for more infill, but hopefully Atlanta will continue to densify as things improve.

I agree with you, TarHeel. Excellent point. Also, it looks like things are finally picking up again with Streets of Buckhead, the Novare apartments, the Civil Rights museum, etc etc. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Atlanta will continue to densify after these and other projects come to fruition.

Good example, Micropundit. However, I believe what will give Atlanta an even more urban feel and vibe are the mid to low rise, mixed use developments that continue to stitch together the intown urban fabric. Here is what I believe is more representative of how intown Atlanta is densifying:

Yes! Exactly my point...here are more examples - love them or hate them - of the great strides Atlanta has been making with infill development:

Great examples, thanks. Now if there just was a location of oh,say of about 100 contiguous acres that was served by mutiple modes of transportation and located in the center of the city here in Atlanta that could support BOTH horizontal and vertical density ,pedestrian friendly streetscapes and greenspace. you know like combine the lessons learned from Atlantic Station,Glenwood Park et. al. If only that location and the opportunity existed.

$39 million project to relocate Brookwood Station

http://clatl.com/freshloaf/archives/2011...ion-amtrak-station-near-atlantic-station

This project was the original basis for namimg the redevelopment of the former Atlantic Steel mill site ,Atlantic Station. Now it could,in addition to re igniting the TOD focus of AS, foster an interesting MXD on Peachtree Road ,one block from SCAD.

More news on Streets of Buckhead

Developer: Modifications for Streets of Buckhead

Oliver told the audience he’s “98 percent” certain he’ll own the six-block project by month’s end. Cranes will begin moving by year end or in early 2012, he said.

Plans still call for two luxury apartment towers, shops, restaurants and office space. Oliver said he's also considering a Venezuelan-based theater concept, how to make the pedestrian experience very "intimate" in the project and how to incorporate a lot of indoor/outdoor dining concepts.

"Construction expected to begin very soon"

In the Atlanta Business Chronicle today it says that this 12-story dual-brand hotel will begin construction "very soon" and that it will open in the first quarter of 2013.
Brochure: http://www.lpbatlanta.com/InfoPages/hotels/207011_HGI_HWS-Atlanta.pdf

A 6-story hotel will also begin construction at the Cobb Galleria around the same time.

Hey Micro, I just posted this link on city-data.com from someone that posted it in another section of this forum. Do you happen to frequent city-data.com, as well?
