South End Housing complex another step closer getting started
September 17, 2008
By: News 88-9'sDenise Barkhouse

SAINT JOHN, NB - A major housing development in the city's south end is closer to becoming a reality.

The Church of St. Andrew and St. David is behind the 91 unit complex that will be home to mixed income families, and hosted a community meeting last night.

Reverend Bill Thomas said neighbours have been very supportive.

He said if all goes as planned, construction will begin this December with the clearing of the property.

"We are including underground parking as part of this project and the excavation will begin in December, the concrete will be laid for the underground parking, and the first level. We're hoping to have that done by January and then the building will take place after that." said Thomas.

55- 60 units of the building will be subsidized by the government.

The church is still taking suggestions and ideas from people, and it can be done anytime between now and December.

ahhh...true, but the "silver lining" in all this is that the SJ region is even having to come to these realizations in the first place!!

I would suggest that the sooner suggestions come in, the more likely they will be integrated.

Last night at the presenation some valid concerns about how to make the apartments disability friendly were offered by the crowd.

News of the day I have heard is Irving Oil has bought and is changing the East Side Elementary School into office space. A little redundant if Long Wharf goes through.

Long Wharf is some time away given that the Feds haven't even approved the land swap. It could be that East Side is just transition space until the new headquarters is set up. Presumably they'd need a ton of space (and temporary) for folks working on 2'nd refinery that wouldn't be needed long term.

Build it and they will come
Published Saturday September 20th, 2008

Details An enhanced regional transportation corridor could create 100,00 jobs, study finds

C1DAVID SHIPLEY

Telegraph-Journal
BAR HARBOUR, Maine - When governors from New England and premiers from the Canadian East met here this week, they were presented with highlights from a yet-to-be released study, and one astounding conclusion: spruce up your highways, railways and ports and it'll bring 100,000 jobs.

There were no magic prescriptions, only mantras that have been heard time and again. But this time they came with a tantalizing prize - a wealth of new employment. And not just in transportation but in a wide variety of fields - after all, built it and they will come: hotels, restaurants, service stations, new enterprise. Good-paying jobs mean new homes, new spending. Ease to market brings lower costs, higher productivity, more profit and great investment.

*sic*

With all this talk of putting weight restrictions on trucks, etc on the US side, and some renewed interest in beefing up rail transit across canada (a need even more blatantly underscored by recent rising fuel costs), this may be the beginning of a new age for freight / passenger rail service...

either way, as the eastern canada / new england ties grow, southern NB and SJ in particular will become a more prominent distribution / access hub. . .our roads and rail lines are the arteries of our economy, and the more we wisely invest in them, the better

It looks like the excavation of the hillside near Home Depot (where Costco will hopefully be built) has stopped short of what I had imagined. I don't see the big machinery anymore but there is still a lot of rock remaining. Does anyone know what is going on there? Has it been officially determined that Costco will come to Saint John?

Keep in mind, the EastPoint shopping complex in it's current state is not even 50% of what the final sq. footage / footprint will look like; AS far s I know, Costco has not received the final 'green light', but this seems to be simply a formality at this point. Either way, the hillside excavation has to happen sooner or later.....

No metion in the article of the added pressure of regional competition (let alone competing nationally); for example, eastern NL is facing similar challenges in trying to attract the number of needed skilled workers for the upcoming oil & gas projects over the next decade or so....
