No, that's not how it works actually. Since the world is a sphere (well close to one), its not a direct relationship between height and distance to the horizon. The equation is as follows:

distance to the horizon = sqrt( 13*Height)

So...

the Square root of (13* 1200m) = 124.9 km. Not the 300km you would say...

If you don't believe me, look up "horizon" on Wikipedia and do the math yourself...

Distance seen gets exponentially harder to gain with added height since the spherical shape of the earth makes distance recede at an exponentially faster rate with height...

I have to agree totally with you. The other towers were nicelly well think the exterior design to become unique in world. They are well shaped with elegance and coordination in harmony with forms. The Al Burj is just a massive comic bldg tower without elegant lines and volume. In that proposed shape would be nicier if smaller and lower spires, the half I would say, but just wanting to beat the concurrent Burj Dubai, they increase strastospherical the height.

With Distance it is quite making sense to me also.

Does anyone know if Dubai imposes any FAR's (Floor Area Ratio) on buildings? New York's FAR's seem to put limits on how high developments can be built there.

That is not correct, so it doesn't matter. As I pointed out, if you actually do the math you would see that there is not a linear correlation between height and distance seen, its an logarthmic correlation.

Anyhow, PLEASE STOP TALKING ABOUT AL BURJ IN THIS THREAD!!!! IT HAS ITS OWN THREAD!

Plus Dubai is filled with all "plastic" modern buildings, places like NY and Chicago have old mixed with the new that creates an atmosphere of a true world city. Dubai cant have that for a while to come
