Can anyone identify the location in the Shulman pictures?
You're right Hoss, none of the Hody's match the Shulman photograph. (it has that rectangle area on the roof)

The one that comes closest is the Pacific Coast Highway location in Long Beach.

Los Altos?

The Shulman Hody's appears to be self serve, so I thought it might be one of the two locations at the bottom.

The company was sold to the Hupp Motor Car Corp at the end of 1928. I think that the Nash sign says "Temporary Quarters". The 1923 CD lists the Mecca Oriental Rug Cleaning Company at 106 N Western Avenue, but it looks like Henderson's occupies the whole building here. I love the little Hercules Gasoline station - I wonder whether those squares were black and white, or something more colorful. It appears as the Petitfils & Miller service station at 102 N Western Avenue in the 1923 CD. Check out the used cars in the lower right corner.

Detail of picture above.

"The" Laurel Station on Laurel Canyon also sold Hercules Gasoline in 1923. Perhaps the Hercules donkey was better suited to the Laurel canyon terrain than the well-paved Western Ave.

Suffice it to say, the provincial signage may be of interest to those with a poor sense of direction.

Which way to United (Burbank/Bob Hope) Airport? Hand painted folk art doubtlessly engendered a sense of extreme confidence in the nascent air transport industry. Commissioned by the railroads? Painted by a grounded pilot?

The interior shots below are great - I just wish there were more of the outside.

All from Getty Research Institute

I can't find any other pictures of Hody's that match this one, and none of the addresses I've found look right on Historic Aerials. The following notes about Hody's are from gogonotes.blogspot.com:
1960

There were 8 Hody's restaurants in Southern California at this time.

Hody's opened in the Panorama City Shopping Center at Van Nuys and Roscoe Blvd.

1965

Hody's opened at Victory and Sepulveda Blvds in Van Nuys. This Hody's replaced the former Hody's at Venura [sic] Blvd. and Sepulveda Blvd.

The Hody's at 3553 La Brea (at Rodeo) featured expanded service, circular drive-in and a sign pylon rising from the roof was designed by Wayne McCallister.

Can anyone identify the location in the Shulman pictures?

Hopefully, the images at Getty will be available again by tomorrow!

This is the corner of Van Nuys and Roscoe. There used to be a Bob's Big Boy in that location as well. Boy has it changed!

This is a link for a pic of that corner in the 60's. You can see the corner on the right, just below the Golds sign...

I just found this annotated snapshot from the 1940s.

Someone has pointed out their upstairs apartment at 249 N. Larchmont Blvd.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vtg-1940s-19...YAAOSwk1JWgeoJ

The building stills stands on the southwest corner, minus the architectural ornament around the door.

gsv

Do you think the arched doorway was added, or was it beneath the 'facade' of the Christian Science Reading Room?

This also caught my eye.

Well, I was only able to dig up this photograph (so far).

Look at that!!! Two gas jockeys rush to care for a car while the man driver sits comfortably and nonchalantly in his seat.

This was just posted on Photos of Los Angeles on Facebook. It's a lovely photograph of The NBC Radio Studio in Hollywood.

Oh, and Jane Mansfield and her daughter, actress Mariska Hargitay.

Thanks for all the follow-ups on Hody's. I wonder why there are no other good pictures of this site.

This is actually the corner of W 3rd Street and Lucerne Boulevard. I had trouble reading the sign on the right, but the name definitely ends with an "E", and Lucerne is on the same block.

Detail of picture in USC Digital Library

The corner house isn't visible in the 1952 image, but the next three houses are still standing in recognizable form. I had to go back a few years to get this view that wasn't blocked by trees.

PS. BifRayRock - could you please include real links to the USC images you post, rather than turning a credit into a link to a non-existent website. I had to spend five minutes searching for the image above when I could've been there in a single click!

Does anyone recognize the location in this photograph from eBay?
It appears to be along the edge of Bunker Hill (the seller places the date as 1910).

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Photo-ca-191...MAAOSwYHxWOsl6

-I find it interesting that the house closest to the camera is so much lower than the other houses.

That said, I sure wish there was more information on this photograph. I'd love to know what organization these fine looking ladies belonged to.
The mesh that covers the horses is also interesting.

The photograph is part of the CHS Collection in the USC Digital Library. Here's the information they provide with the picture:
Title

Horse-drawn wagon, the Friday Morning Club float, decorated with flowers for La Fiesta de Los Angeles, ca.1901 (1920?)

Description

Photograph of a carriage drawn by 6 horses and decorated with flowers, the Friday Morning Club float, standing at the corner of Second Street and Hill Street, during La Fiesta de Los Angeles, ca.1901 (1920?). The carriage carries about 15 women and a driver. The women are wearing "orange" hats. The horses have nets on their backs. Several houses are visible on the embankment adjacent to the street in the background.

The woman in the middle front row, next to the driver, may be Caroline Severance, the founder of the Los Angeles Friday Morning Club, suffragist and abolitionist. The Friday Morning Club had its headquarters at 940 S. Figueroa in the 1920's and the second building on the site, a historic landmark, is still there today.

mrfredmertz, great photo but I am wondering if the information is correct. Mariska Hargitay was born in 1964 and this photo seems to be taken prior to that. While it is possible it could have been taken later, it looks to me like it was taken in the '50s.

Thanks for correcting the street address from Larchmont to Lucerne. (Original post has been corrected as such.) Once the source planted the Larchmont “seed,” all it took was a picture of rain water to grow the idea. The mistaken “then and now” differences made it all too easy to imagine long-gone apartments or duplexes. Too bad about the iconic palm trees though. I guess they overstayed their welcome. Looking for any connection with a street car line that once ran on Larchmont was also perplexing, but it was assumed it must have been underwater.

For more on Larchmont's street cars: http://www.larchmontbuzz.com/uncateg...t-at-gramercy/ and http://www.larchmontbuzz.com/larchmo...oto-from-1950/ (I believe some of these photos have been on NLA.)
