"The" Laurel Station on Laurel Canyon also sold Hercules Gasoline in 1923. Perhaps the Hercules donkey was better suited to the Laurel canyon terrain than the well-paved Western Ave.

I can't find any other pictures of Hody's that match this one, and none of the addresses I've found look right on Historic Aerials. The following notes about Hody's are from gogonotes.blogspot.com:

1960

There were 8 Hody's restaurants in Southern California at this time.

Hody's opened in the Panorama City Shopping Center at Van Nuys and Roscoe Blvd.

1965

Hody's opened at Victory and Sepulveda Blvds in Van Nuys. This Hody's replaced the former Hody's at Venura [sic] Blvd. and Sepulveda Blvd.

The Hody's at 3553 La Brea (at Rodeo) featured expanded service, circular drive-in and a sign pylon rising from the roof was designed by Wayne McCallister.

Can anyone identify the location in the Shulman pictures?

This is the corner of Van Nuys and Roscoe. There used to be a Bob's Big Boy in that location as well. Boy has it changed!

I just found this annotated snapshot from the 1940s.

The corner house isn't visible in the 1952 image, but the next three houses are still standing in recognizable form. I had to go back a few years to get this view that wasn't blocked by trees.

Does anyone recognize the location in this photograph from eBay?
It appears to be along the edge of Bunker Hill (the seller places the date as 1910).

-I find it interesting that the house closest to the camera is so much lower than the other houses.

That said, I sure wish there was more information on this photograph. I'd love to know what organization these fine looking ladies belonged to.

The woman in the middle front row, next to the driver, may be Caroline Severance, the founder of the Los Angeles Friday Morning Club, suffragist and abolitionist. The Friday Morning Club had its headquarters at 940 S. Figueroa in the 1920's and the second building on the site, a historic landmark, is still there today.

mrfredmertz, great photo but I am wondering if the information is correct. Mariska Hargitay was born in 1964 and this photo seems to be taken prior to that. While it is possible it could have been taken later, it looks to me like it was taken in the '50s.

Thanks for correcting the street address from Larchmont to Lucerne. (Original post has been corrected as such.) Once the source planted the Larchmont “seed,” all it took was a picture of rain water to grow the idea. The mistaken “then and now” differences made it all too easy to imagine long-gone apartments or duplexes. Too bad about the iconic palm trees though. I guess they overstayed their welcome. Looking for any connection with a street car line that once ran on Larchmont was also perplexing, but it was assumed it must have been underwater.
