Actually, this is not a student residence per se. It is a mixture of affordable and more upscale apartments that *could be* rented by students (or other low income persons). The development will be managed by the UW Community Renewal Corporation. Not a true student residence like McFeetors on Langside.

From Free Press: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/business/14-storeys-to-call-home-233421231.html

"It will include one-, two- and three-bedroom units. Forty-six will be earmarked for low-income Manitobans -- mainly students with families -- with 32 of them offered on a rent-geared-to-income basis.

The other 56 units will be offered at market rents, with 16 of them designed as premium units."

I know they are owned by the same people/person but seriously... Is parking in that area so demanded that you have to put a cravat in perpetuity on another property as a part of the parking management plan? Ugh -- talk about running through hoop just to get some infill development.

And we wonder why people don't like to try to do urban infill...

New home to add at least 100 personal care beds in Transcona
By: Larry Kusch

A new personal care home is going to be built in Transcona.

The facility, which will include at least 100 beds, is to be developed by Park Manor Personal Care Homes Inc. on its site at Kildare Avenue East and Redonda Street.

It will be built next to the current 100-bed personal care home and the East Park Lodge independent living complex for seniors.

The three facilities will be connected by a new concourse.

Construction is expected to begin in 2015 and take about two years to complete, Health Minister Erin Selby said Monday.

In addition to having private rooms with washrooms, the new facility will include space for recreational activities, family areas and landscaped outside grounds, she said.

It may not be exciting news but important to the community in general.

^ That'll be an interesting one. So is Tyvek Manor now completed? The one that was sitting for a few years? That was the one at waterfront and Heaton IIRC.

Last I saw, Phase II (which I think just started last year) is almost complete.

Edit: Just checked Google street view. In July 2012 Phase I of You Cube was complete, Phase II was starting piles.

Ah yes, I see that. Thanks. I hadn't been down waterfront in a while. Drove by there the other day and it looked different. Must've only been last summer/fall they were completed? I bike down there regularly, maybe I just missed it..

So does anybody know, is there some kind of liability or something for leaving it unfinished for a lengthy period of time (years) when selling these units? Such as mould, etc.

not Winnipeg, but done by Winnipeg firm.

Think of it like exposed concrete or Cor-ten Steel.......this may be the look of the future.

^ Hard to believe that it's been over 10 years since those photos were taken! I still think of the MTS Centre as "the new arena"...

Surprised that nobody has hit on this yet - might be biggest news of the year!

New Proposal for Parcel 4 at the Forks

CJOB Team Coverage
June 04, 2014 05:25 am

The last piece of undeveloped land at the Forks could be transformed into two parking structures, housing, some retail and plenty of Green space that will also link the site to downtown.

It’s an ambitious plan that will transform the surface parking lots known as “Parcel 4″ opposite the new Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

That’s the land near Shaw Park that was put forward as a possible sight for the controversial hotel and water park plan that was eventually killed by city council.

Some details of this new plan are still being worked out and there will still be another round of public consultations before anything is finalized. The plan also needs approval from the City of Winnipeg.

Forks North Portage Partnership President and CEO Jim August says the idea is that the retail will include market style shops and the site would also include a link to Upper Fort Garry under construction south of Broadway on Main.

And August says they want to push more pedestrians through the Portage and Main area in anticipation of it eventually reopening to traffic.

“We really believe that a pedestrian flow to Portage and Main is important so our engineers have been working on that.”

He says they’re also looking at putting a walkway of some kind over the rail lines. Waterfront Drive may eventually be extended through Point Douglas.

The plan will take shape over the next five years as the public consultations continue. There are no cost estimates at this point.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Forks.

^ Good news! I'm confident that the proposals will be solid given that the concepts unveiled some years ago had all of the right elements. And besides, FNP has done a very good job with the site generally... I have a lot of faith in them.

Fantastic news; though CJOB's choice to place "two parking structures" at the top of the list nearly caused me to choke.

Having met Jim, I think he has the best intentions, but it was my impression that him and the 3rd party planner FNP has hired to do consultation for this project have a "silver bullet" idea for this parcel similar to the plan he put together when he was with the Core Area Initiatives.

This might just be my impression...

50% of the FNP's income comes from Parking (at least according to page 15 of this report). They know which side their bread is buttered.
