BTW the roundabout style interchanges they built at the west end of the Portage By Pass are brutal. Jack-knifed semis there all winter. Better than the semis crashing into the bridge I guess.

I don't think our drivers are up to handling a roundabout interchange, particularly in winter driving conditions. Nobody knows how to drive without speeding or slamming on the brakes.
Roundabouts are great when used properly. It's just that lots of drivers don't use it properly, which is where the safety concerns come in.

But maybe they could just use traffic lights for the ramps for the Interchange. But I feel like my design with the intersections linking to the service roads would use up less land as it would just connect to the frontage roads beside the Highway already there.

CBC report on Hwy 5 interchange vs. other intersections

The CBC did a report comparing other intersections on the Trans-Canada and mentioned Deacon's Corner as well as the 1/16 intersection.

Yes, it sucks that MTI has recently repaved Deacon’s Corner junction. As I said earlier, though, an interim solution will be to turn that junction into right-in right-out. The local businesses won’t take too much of a hit as westbound cross-country traffic can still go there before hopping on the Perimeter Highway.

The cost of these accidents needs to be taken into consideration… millions spent on emergency services, hospital care, payouts for disabilities. Then there’s the cost to other businesses because of detours and backed up traffic… not to mention the lives lost.

Manitoba needs to shit or get off the pot… all these extra people living here… what are they doing with that tax money?

This may be a little tight for Deacons Corner and would leave the railway crossing intact, but I feel like this would be an affordable solution to making Highway 1 free flow. I'm kinda disappointed they built the Subway/ Little Caesars in the ROW they could've put a full ramp.

This may be a little expensive, but I feel like this is the more expensive, but workable solution is a realignment is done.

I was also looking at Steinbach MB North of Loewen Blvd and I feel like that area should utilize service roads. I remember last week I was trying to drive to the Clearspring Center from the Co-op, but the traffic signal at the Superstore enterance is so poorly timed, it's sickening. It would be so much easier if there was a Service Road to head to Park Road or the Canadian Tire Lot and redirect traffic to the Park Road Intersection as its optimized for Higher Capacity.

The Superstore/ McMunn and Yates Traffic Signals should be converted to a half-median enterance as opposed to a full signalized intersection.

This looks like the Kenaston of Steinbach. #stroad

Well, I think I found a way to make Highway 12 in Steinbach Free-er flowing by limiting access to direct enterances from the Highway without limiting access to businesses.

https://imgur.com/a/AZlsMLw

I feel like this would be a better idea along with better traffic light synchronization from Penfeld Drive to North Gate Drive. This way traffic flow on Highway 12 is much smoother without having to constantly stop and go like we do now. It bothers me that the Superstore, Park Road, and Mall Accesses are so close to one another and poorly timed. When one light turns green, the next light turns red when you get there.

Highway 12 South of 52 doesn't really need upgrades as most traffic coming from the North usually goes to downtown. And around 20% of Steinbach going South of 52 traffic are pass through traffic.

Speaking of which, they posted this on SteinbachOnline today:

https://www.steinbachonline.com/arti...ways-52-and-59

The Highway 12 @ 52 Intersection could use a minor facelift as the turning lanes are rather poor and I agree that there should be another turning lane for traffic going into Downtown from 12 North. Even right turning lanes going from 12 to 52 and vice versa.

My chicken scratch on the other projects mentioned here:

- As mentioned: Highway 12 @ 52 could use some minor adjustments like turning lanes, etc.
- Highway 59 and 52 twinning is critical from Ile Des Chenes to Mitchell. Thankfully it's in planning stages, but hopefully it will come to fruition. 52 Twinning east to La Broquerie doesn't need to happen right away, but upgrades to service roads, turning and bypass lanes (as mentioned) are needed there.
- Highway 12 South of Steinbach could use some passing lanes especially between Highway 403 and Steinbach boundary. Due to the heavy amount of Agriculture traffic more service roads, some intersection upgrades, and shoulder upgrades are needed there too. Twinning (most likely to 205 if done) likely won't be warranted for a while.
- Highway 201 West of 302 is supposed to be upgraded in phases to Dominion City to handle truck traffic. I live in that area, which I'd be happy to see Highway 201 get the love it deserves despite being a minor Highway. Between DMC and Letellier it has been upgraded around 2017 or so with bypass lanes, etc. During harvest seasons, there's lots of truck traffic which could make that road warrant some passing lanes.
- The PTH 12 traffic flow and lights goes with my Expressway upgrade plan.
- And yes... We do need some kind of upgrade on Hwy 1 @ 206. Dear god, please put an Interchange at 206 along with Deacons Corner. We need some something as simple as this:

Would need an overpass for the CNR Sprague as there's a passing siding there.

Without a realignment of Highway 1, an Interchange could look like this, which is pretty close to what I have in my drawing.

Edit: I drew something more like Billiings at Deacons Corner at one point.

Just make sure that there is enough room for divided 6 lanes with proper shoulders.

It's open field in every direction you look at the TCH/206. There's plenty of room for a standard diamond with 3 lanes of traffic in each direction.

There's also room to shift the TCH north to have a standard diamond interchange without the rail overpass to keep costs down (the Centre of Canada Park would have to be moved further north, and maybe one farmhouse expropriation). 206 traffic probably doesn't warrant a rail overpass.

The problem with PTH 1E is obviously proximity to the railway. If ever interchange were installed along the route between 101 and 12. If they wanted to bump away from the railway at the interchange locations we'd end up with this curvy, messy highway. Would almost need to move the entire highway northwards. Which is of course very inefficient and costly.

Probably the easiest way is to leave the crossing roads at grade crossing the railway, main highway go over the crossing road, and build the ramp(s) to go over the railway. Or some form of ramp that crosses overtop by itself.

Not the best example here. But same idea. Ramp goes over to the north side.

RM of Taché has a recent (2021) concept in their planning docs that was done in consultation with MTI at some point.

https://tache.municipalwebsites.ca/c...20%5BEA%5D.pdf

Page #18 in the document, 24th page of the PDF.

It shows a concept where both legs of the 206 (north and south of TCH) are realigned to meet in the middle of their current alignments at the TCH, with an interchange. This is in a spot with just one small farmhouse so would be cheaper on expropriation than the current location. This is just a simple map and doesn't address the rail line (overpass or not), but at least MTI has a plan for it and probably has restrictions on building in the proposed realignment.

As for highway curviness - I can't imagine that there would be more than 3 interchanges in between 12 and the Perimeter (Deacon, 206, 207E) which shouldn't be too much of an issue over 26 km. They would be gradual curves

The 206 thing makes sense. I was also thinking 3, maybe 4 if they want one closer to west side of lorette. The highway is nice and straight right now. Adding in all those curves seems ridiculous to me. But that's just my opinion.

One thing that was nice to see with the last round of design on the PTH 101 study. They got rid of all the funky realignment options and just kept everything on existing alignment. Curves, realignment and round about all are confusing and inefficient.

We're all day dreaming here so it doesn't really matter anyways.

^ I wouldn’t call that dreaming. MTO documents for twinning TCH between Thunder Bay and Nipigon discuss interchange locations and shapes.

Something as simple as this could be done there. It would be one of the cheaper designs while not disrupting traffic flow patterns.

The left turns from 206 NB onto the TCH WB and from 206 SB onto the THC EB are quite dangerous, especially around the rush hours and on summers with weekend traffic. Something really bad is eventually going to happen at one of those intersections. But, given the firm plans and intent for the Perimeter Hwy (100 and 101) to be free-flowing and all the interchanges that entails, it may be ages before we ever see an interchange at the TCH and 206. And frankly, they are more urgently needed at Deacon's Corner (207), 16/Yellowhead, and the two in Brandon. Which really makes me scratch my head at why they spent so much money and effort upgrading the lights and intersection at TCH and 207. They were half way to an interchange!

I went down the rabbit hole and checked out all your drawings. You’ve actually put in a lot of thoughts on grade-separating TCH in Manitoba.

Any thoughts on the section (twinning and grade separation) from Ontario Highway 673 to Dryden? (You will have to consult MTO’s permit control zone map for Dryden Bypass.)
