Does this mean that they have started working on the first setback?

Just about. Better comparison from that side. Someone can post the graphic to show where we are at this stage.

It's possible that the new Grand Hyatt could have rooms that high. Possible.

Interesting possibility. I find it a little surprising that there aren't many supertall hotels (List of tallest hotels on Wikipedia), and the tallest hotel in NYC or the US for that matter is only 753 ft. I hope Grand Hyatt feels tempted to build the world's tallest hotel.

I'm not sure about that, but most hotels on these types of mixed-use office/hotel towers place the hotel portion at the top of the tower. There will be no condos at the site, so that sounds about right. But whatever the case, the Hyatt will have views of both the Chrysler and Vanderbilt.

Because most tall buildings that hold hotel rooms are mixed use: Grand Hyatt @ One57, Four Seasons @ 30PP, etc.

This tower valorizes also the Brooklyn skyline on background.

^ Yeah, in that view 2 more supertall towers (9 DeKalb and 247 Cherry St) will seem in the same cluster of towers.

I think the last coupe of large booms (I think the 60's and 80's) were mostly filler buildings that made the skyline into more of a skyscraper mass. But the full scale changes that are overtaking the city's skyline is something its never witnessed before. We better enjoy it while we can.

^ Awsome!

We're already at the best part, and it seems like this tower started rising last week. It's been a fast ride.

Every one of this tower's setbacks appear to compliment the ESBs setbacks. To a tee. Bravo, design team. We have a 21st century ESB.

Yep, that's what I've been saying. I only wish they could have gone with the original plans for a slightly taller tower. But that's just spoiled me talking.

21st century ESB is blasphemous. Had this tower's facade stripes been vertical, instead of horizontal, I would agree. As of now, I would rather call this the younger sibling of the Bank of America tower.

No, in form it has way more in common with the ESB. The Bank of America tower is a bloated mass of a building.

I think this is still my favorite tower going up in the city, but Steinway is really trying to take the cake.

One Vanderbilt is at least 310.9m tall which is the height of the observation deck, the 88m tall crown and the 30m spire are left for the topping out
