The low rise that went bankrupt on 132 St and King George (under the SkyTrain on the hill coming up into Gateway) has now had all of the wooden structures that were covered up removed. Looks like it is mostly just the concrete base that is left.

Belvedere (on the old Knight and Day Restaurant lot) opening up registration for presales in Spring 2021. Happy to see this tower get going as it will really add density to the area.

There are so many proposed developments for that area it's hard to keep track of them all o_O

I hope they all get built. It will start to transform that area and encourage more proposals between 104 and 108 Ave to bridge the gap between Gateway and Surrey Central.

Starting to see it.

Two big things to me that should spark a lot of change are:

1. Building towers and major developments between 104 and 108
2. Building towers and major developments east of King George (I am excluding the development that is/has happened right around King George Station).

We're already ticking box 2 with things like Anthem's proposals and the current tower under construction, and now it looks like box 1 is starting to really get ticked.

Towers between 104 and 108 will just be really weirdly situated until others get built because of what surrounds them right now. I also hope the city does something to help the existing small businesses from being displaced.

For sure within reason though. Many of the businesses in that space cater to the homeless in the area. I would imagine they should or would be accommodated for through efforts to bring social housing to the area with new projects.

Others like the smattering of auto shops and glass repair can frankly go anywhere and don't really have a place in a downtown. They'd likely be better off moving to more industrial zoning.

That part of Whalley was largely industrial and that is changing.

Wouldn't you know it, but I checked my mail today and got a public hearing notice to rezone that whole block of businesses (not counting the ones fronting King George like Rickshaw) to allow for up to 4 towers.

So that definitely shows that the twin gateway concept on KGB is gone.
Which makes the design of the landmark tower a bit more accepable (in that there won't be 2 of them).

Note how it does not show The Grand on King geogre (just behind the landmark tower).

It's not a park actually. The "path" you see cutting diagonal is technically "136 street" though it isn't a street. The open fields are just undeveloped properties, been that way for decades. I think it is just remnants of that area being quite rough for decades. We'll see if they get redeveloped now that things are improving and there is a push to development in that area.

Did something big and industrial get demolished in the area back in the day as there are so many of these under-developed lots in that area? I am not familiar with the history of this area.

There isn't a lot of 'back in the day': "Most of the uplands were heavily forested with the occasional area of peat bog and scrub. Settlement did not take place until the logging had cleared most of the heavy trees. The heaviest settlement occurred after 1945 with the development and availability of the bulldozer for clearing the properties."

people use it has a park. The area across from that park to the east plus about two more blocks to the east is all up for rezoning right now, those houses will be making way for mid-size redevelopments, the rezoning signs have been up for quite a while now.
