The suburban town of Paradise has no taste at all, but still somehow more than that garage mansion.

126 Ridgewood Dr

But factor in our love of clear-cutting and overhead wires, and it's probably uglier.

thank god for the return of humor to this thread.

John Baird has never looked so good, in my opinion.

I give you The Strathcona Hotel on York Street. It's covered in beige and brown aluminium siding. Does anybody know if there is a brick or limestone building hiding under all that crap?

The (two?) bottom levels aren't too bad at all.

The name of the hotel on the side wall, that looks like it comes from a gigantic stick-on kids' lettering set from Toys R Us, doesn't help either.

It's not much more than a guess, but for some reason I'm thinking that it was buff or gold-coloured brick with a stone facade that it lost when the building was expanded. For many years it was mostly covered in aluminum siding, was it not?

The Strathona Hotel is hideous, chop it in half vertically and you'd expect to find it in Thunder Bay, not a block away from the Royal York.

The Strathcona hotel actually doesn't really bother me. It's rather forgettable.

If you want ugly check out the Marriott in downtown Calgary:

Or the Carriage House Inn:

There's still nothing that can top the Fantasyland Hotel when it comes to ugly kitsch.

Is deliberately ugly kitsch still ugly, or is it kitscheriffic?

^ That Marriott looks great to me... in that photo, at least. The Carriage House, though... yikes.

It's a bunker in the middle of downtown. Here's some street context:

As for the Carriage House, can you believe that was a recent reno they actually paid for. That crown thing was added on and so was the fake stone at the bottom. It used to just be all white. If you ask me they should have spent the money updating the interior lobby and restaurant instead.

It reminds me of the apartment tower from Judge Dredd.

Is it an abuse of mod privileges to suspend someone for a few days for liking the Marriot?

I think we need the admins to arrange for some mandatory brutalism appreciation training for all mods!
