When I arrived in Austin for the first time about 20 years ago, I saw Red River snaking along the edge of Downtown on the map and thought it must be a scenic drive that I needed to go check out. I was a little disappointed with the scenic quality. Now that they have put the grid back, that organic anomaly is all but erased.
Yeah, we still have Lamar along Shoal Creek for that at least.
There are places where concrete is used. Particularly bus lanes and a lot of Downtown streets. Concrete is more expensive but lasts longer. It is also more difficult to cut for adding utilities later, so it used more often where complete rebuilding of the street including utilities are done, so the street doesn't need to be cut open for a long time. The problem is that with so much development going on, there are still cuts needed for local utility connections even if the mains were recently replaced.
