You've got centertown buildings left and right being pooh-pooed for being too bland/not good enough design, and then in the market..IN THE MARKET, you get this box with the cheapest cladding money can't buy.

Not only that, but this is the building that dominates the entire view when entering the market area.

Its a shame, as I really like development, but there is way better cladding out there these days. And how about NOT a box for once?

Elevations and materials are regulated through the site plan control process.

The site plan application was panned by the UDRP in Fall 2013
http://ottawa.ca/en/development-appl...r-2-and-3-2013

The zoning also went to the OMB in Fall 2013 with a decision in January 2014 with the board determining the issues raised were more appropriate for the site plan process http://www.omb.gov.on.ca/e-decisions...-15-2014-1.pdf

The application seems to have been approved sometime Spring 2014, but it's no longer on the City's site, and the archive on Ottwatch doesn't have 2014 documents.
http://ottwatch.ca/devapps/D07-12-12-0199

So it's definitely possible the design/materials changed between Fall 2013 and Spring 2014. If you check the elevations there are labels where they show what materials are proposed.

There are also different sets of rules specific to the different Community Design Plans covering different neighbourhoods, each one written at a different time, incorporating different planning fads and experiments, that impose different requirements on builders.

Andaz has the Ottawa/Byward Market webpage up now:
http://ottawa.andaz.hyatt.com/en/hotel/home.html

Here are a few renders we haven't seen yet that are available in their photo gallery:

Patio (presumably on the top-floor terrace)

Restaurant

Lounge

That is a fancy new webpage... without a single exterior shot or rendering :o

I rarely get to the market these days... any movement on the construction? Does it look like they're moving ahead with the vinyl siding? or does the exterior still seem stalled?

There's some small movement on the exterior, mostly on the upper floors. The hoarding has started to come down at the base.

Noticed today that there was a request for a liquor license posted in the window on the main floor that corners Dalhousie and York St.

This building is an embarrassment. I can't think of a building I dislike more right now.

I concur. I actively hate this building daily. I wish it wasn't visible from my commute. What an eyesore for such a high profile location in a G7 Capital. This building doesn't have ANY architectural merit. It's cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap.

On the plus side, the building already looks quite old. Maybe we can tear it down in 4 or 5 years and try again?

Third time's a charm.

Agree -- worst building under construction in the entire city right now. Will likely retain the title of worst building in the city once it's done too.

Does anyone have a recent photo?

Can someone send a recent photo and the rendering to Andaz and/or Claridge and see if they have any comment on the matter??

You will never see a decent photo of this building.

The Union with its brutalist style had character, but many thought it was ugly. Can't understand how it was any worse than this Claridge POS.

We went from very ugly to very ugly, IMO. Not sure whether this or the Union de Canada was worse.

The old "bait and switch" sales technique is alive and well , and living in Ottawa.
