It's a GO shelter for the stadium. Give Bratina or Clark an email if you want more proof. They both even talked about in public last night during COW.

It's not like the Train will make the stop to the stadium every day, probably only 20 times a year, same treatment with the CNE.

I definitely will look deeper into this, because what you are describing is whacked, plain and simple. I just can't believe they would even consider wasting the kind of $$ involved in building a station platform ($3-4 million) 200m away from the one at James N (which can serve the area just as well), especially when you say it is just being used 20 times a year.

And this is nothing like Exhibition GO Station for heaven's sake. The Lakeshore local train makes at least 36 stops at Exhibition GO station daily, and there's a 4km distance between it and the station closest to it.

Think about it, that's like putting an extra GO station in at John Street in Toronto because Union Station is too far to serve the Rogers Centre

I followed up with the GO Transit Niagara Expansion EA project lead regarding the confusion over whether there will be an extra station for the Pan Am stadium in addition to the station at James North, seeing as some were left with that impression at the public information centre on May 11. Here is the reply I received:

Thank you for your interest in this project. To answer your question, the James Street station will also double as the Stadium station for the Pan-Am games. When designing the station we will have to address the potential challenges of crowd control by increasing the platforms site as well as the pedestrian access to the west side of the station.

Regards

GO plan envisions 3 new stations

July 12, 2010
Paul Morse
The Hamilton Spectator
http://thespec.com/News/Local/article/806022

"Hamilton will end up with as many as three new GO train stations under a Metrolinx plan to extend commuter rail service to Niagara Falls. The regional transit agency's Niagara Rail Service Expansion Environment Assessment Study recommends GO train stations at James Street North, Fruitland Road, and Fifty Road, as ridership warrants.... The possibility that Hamilton's Pan Am Games stadium could end up on the east Mountain has resurrected a possible station at Centennial Parkway, which had already been knocked off the recommended list."

Where the CN track passes the Confederation Park Shopping Centre property by the QEW between Centennial Pkwy. and Lake Ave.

What's the difference from that article to this article from the Spec on May 13th?

Three Hamilton-area sites are being eyed for new GO train stations if the service's expansion to Niagara ever hits the rails.

GO Transit, after a public information meeting in January on the proposed expansion, is recommending new stations on the CN line at James Street North, Fruitland Road and Fifty Road. The latter site was being pushed by Councillor Dave Mitchell.

James Street would become the terminus of all-day service -- 20 trains a day -- that now runs between Aldershot and Union Station in Toronto.

GO is also recommending establishing stations at Casablanca Boulevard in Grimsby, Ontario Street in Lincoln and the St. Catharines Via station.

Hmm I believe the station should be ready for service during 3rd quarter of 2011. Basically construction of platforms and shelters.

New bus service links Hamilton, Guelph

http://www.thespec.com/news/local/ar...amilton-guelph

GUELPH — Daily bus service between Guelph and Hamilton is running again.

London-based carrier Aboutown Transportation Ltd. began providing twice-daily service between the University of Guelph and downtown Hamilton Monday

There has been no regular service between the two cities since Coach Canada cancelled its service last year.

Those brave enough to make the trip with GO or Greyhound have had to detour through Toronto, taking up to four hours and paying up to $46 to cover 52 kilometres.

There has never been rail service between the two hubs.

Ian Weir, the University of Guelph’s manager of parking and transportation says he was “delighted” at the news.

“This new service will fill a gap in our connectivity with the regions south of Guelph,” he said.

Coach Canada service expanded in 2008 to five trips daily and prompted the university to renovate its transit loop to accommodate the increase.

That’s why many were shocked when the company abruptly dropped its service in last October, one month after students, many of them from Hamilton, had returned to class.

The company said its hand was forced to act after ridership dropped to an average of 11 passengers.

“You are not even covering the cost of the fuel,” Coach Canada spokesperson Brian Morehouse said at the time.

Starting Monday, Hamilton-bound buses will leave from the south end of the University of Guelph’s transit loop at 6 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. each day, arriving at Hamilton’s GO Terminal and McMaster University about an hour later. Return buses will depart Hamilton at 7:25 a.m. and 7:15 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased online or at the University Centre on campus.

Not sure what you mean by Kitchener beating Hamilton with respect to GO train service. Kitchener is just getting rush hour GO train service for the first time next year and Hamilton has had that since 1967.
