whoa, can we change the subject here? The keywords are finding less then savory ads that my company finds offensive. The internet police are going to shut down SSP for me and we don't need that now.

No, it wasn't that. The word 'sex' was appears a handfull of times up there and that was promting dating service ads, which were caught by the company filter. If that happens a few times, my boss gets an email about me trying to access restricted sites. No big deal really.

Does anyone know anything about the pedestrian bridge from the light rail station to Park Meadows? Is it under construction?

Yes, they started that bridge about 3 months ago. Unfortunately, it isn't much. From what I can tell, they are going to only cross the small 'ring street' that goes around the mall (which is only 30 feet wide anyway), and then have the bridge stop and spit out any pedestrians at the end of the parking lot. I hope they at least put in a sidewalk that goes along a row of parking to the mall, but I'm not holding my breath.

At least they crossed the street with a bridge rather than painting some crosswalk stripes and putting a spiral staircase up along the 30-foot concrete wall there...

To cross the bridge from the light rail station, you have to take a pass from a ticket machine and without that pass, you will not be allowed to cross back over the bridge from the mall to the light rail station.

This is to prevent anyone from using Park Meadows parking, as a park-n-ride to use light rail. Of course, it also effectively eliminates the possibility of anyone being dropped off at teh mall, with the intention of just taking the light rail home. Or anyone actually walking from that side of I-25 to use the light rail. They will have to take an RTD shuttle to the other side of I-25, just as they do now--as if the bridge wasn't even there.

Honestly, I think the owners of Park Meadows are being jerks. Obviously they could have allowed RTD to construct structured parking, with controlled access. The first couple stories could have been mall only, The remaining could have separate access and been RTD only.

That would have increased the amount of Parking for Park Meadows customers. It would have made RTD's light rail station have increased functionality. The parking structure also would have provided covered passageway up to near the mall entrance, or possibly directly into the mall (via 2nd floor skybridge).

Oh well, who cares?

wow...they do sound ridiculous - though i'm sure they have reason to protect their megamall-in-the-burbs-surrounded-by-parking-lots-crumbling-kingdom

kind of a missed opportunity really - M to F they could section off a section of their own lot and charge folks $5 per day for park-n-ride and keep all of the revenue.

I still stand by my statement that the mall would have benefited regardless of whether people were charged to use their parking lot to use the light rail. People who use that parking would be likely to visit the mall more often because they'll be parking right next to it everyday. The mall is not as crowded on weekdays anyway, so why do they even care? The parking lots aren't full....

A similar thing happened with Colorado Mills a few years ago. They refused to have the light rail stop there because they were worried people would park at the mall and take light rail into town. What they're not realizing is that people would visit the goddamn mall infinitely more because they parked there on a daily basis.

For example, my bus from Boulder drops me off at Union Station every day, and I actively visit almost every business within a few blocks of there, despite my living 20 minutes away. It's idiotic to assume people will only use your parking lot only to catch the train, then choose somewhere else to hang out, eat, and shop. Sure, some people might do that, but I'd bet it's a much smaller percentage than they assume.

Wal-Mart knows this, that's why Wal-Mart is one of the rare retails stores, to allow semi-trucks and RV's to park in their parking lots. They do this, because these people pull in to park and rest, not to shop, but then what happens? Yes, those people go into Wal-Mart, even though that's not why they pulled in and parked. Then what? They buy something! Brilliant!

Yeah, Bunt, I think you're getting to the heart of the matter there. That whole area is ridiculously pedestrian unfriendly, to the point of pedestrian-antagonistic. I get the distinct impression that the city "planners" (Centennial, Lone Tree, Highland Park, et al) have the "public transportation users don't have enough money for us" mentality. Shame on them.
