I walked by a little while ago and I could only see one railing installed. Is it possible that this sole railing was installed so the developers (or whomever) could get a better idea of how the railings will fit, and are possibly considering other options? Seems far fetched....one would think that, at this stage, the railings issue has been decided and the fact that there's only one or a few up is simply a contruction issue.

oh gosh, look at how disgustingly noticable and stand-outish that railing is. They definitely should have shelled out tons more money to make it fit the curvature better

actually it is very likely

Since only one was added, and we do not see a huge collection of them standing by. They could have ordered those rails as a mock up, before ordering an entire building worth.

It is very common for architects to order a sample constructed, in order to sell the exact debate we are having on this thread, or to better find a solution for matching the curve.

Its form is completely mandated by its location and function.

I don't see that at all. How does it's location drive the design? I know LSE is trying to have a nautical/water theme going here, but this particular plot of land is not inspiring.

I see the balconies and being a flourish, yet a brilliant one that I love. A more pragmatic architect would not have had curved balconies at all.

There is a schematic that was posted a while back that shows how many of the balconies protrude out of the building in order to gain otherwise hampered views of such sites as the lake, the Chicago River, Millenium Park, etc. In addition, there was a great amount of thought put into the design of the balconies with respect to the solar shading that a balcony would provide to the unit below it.

Wow, Aqua is really looking great.

Multiple photos have shown that the balcony paint seems to be a brighter white on the uppermost floors that have been painted so far. Maybe floors 20 - 22? Is this simply because the outer edges of the concrete slab have been painted, or could it possibly be shadow effects from surrounding structures? I cant believe the paint is any different... its an interesting illusion for the time being. This one is certainly fun to watch!

I'm pretty sure they paint the outer edge of the slab at the same time they do the upper surface -- so the brighter white we're seeing is actually a result of the increased reflectivity of the balcony below. You can see the unpainted tops in the photo below -- most of the balcony bottoms were already painted by then.
