Chris, that would have been far superior. Habitable space over parking only looks good if the parking level is skinned in the same facade as the occupied floors, or if it's treated as a piece of public art.

they can have it...food court blows anyway. but i can't help but wonder about the future of Phipps; this seems out of line with a high-end retail image. now it will look like a high-end Town Center Mall with a mega day care center.

Just learned about the Lego Discovery center coming to Phipps just an hour ago....and I'm fricking STOKED!!!!! As a life long Lego fan how awesome is it to find out that one of these...only the second in the United States...is opening up just two blocks from where I live. I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve!

BlueSangha - yeah, but Lego bricks are quite expensive so it doesn't feel too out of place in a high end mall. Though it is a surprise that an family attraction would open at Phipps.

It fits pretty well at Phipps.

Though I've heard that these Legoland Discovery stores are pretty lame. It will stay afloat with birthday parties.

At&t Dolphin Exhibit Opens April 2

After nearly three years of construction and planning, the dolphin expansion at Georgia Aquarium will open April 2.

The $110 million exhibit, formally dubbed AT&T Dolphin Tales, will include a live theatrical show, interactive displays about conservation efforts and a 25-foot-long underwater viewing window.

Crum & Forster Future Looks Brighter

Georgia Tech has acquired the SunTrust Building at Armstead Place and West Peachtree, and is apparently now working to do something "mutually agreeable" with the Crum & Forster building.

By the way.. You guys are gonna love the multi-modal transportation center proposals. Not sure when they will be released to the public yet (my guess is in march), but prepare to be excited!

Cant wait! Any idea of when they could possibly start construction?

And for anyone interested...the demolition of the 17-story Roosevelt House across from Bobby Dodd Stadium is on Sunday Feb. 27, at 7am.

Breathing a sigh of relief for Crum & Forster. Also, I look forward to the transit center plans! I would guess that the new alumni center will also include tailgating space. Currently alumni tailgate on Peters, near COA, and on 5th street bridge. The current alumni center is in the old 1912 Rockefeller Building on North (next to Roosevelt House and future site of alumni center).

An explanation from the Atlanta Housing Authority:
http://atlantahousingauthority.blogspot.com/2011/02/roosevelt-house-implosion.html

"The buildings, public housing for senior and disabled citizens, were named after men with storied histories – Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Charles Foster Palmer – but the buildings themselves have become obsolete to the point where demolition was the only option. Moreover, not only were the physical facilities beyond repair, so too were the public policies that had allowed a marvelous idea to degenerate into a system that guaranteed human failure."

Dome study doesn't rule out new stadium

Here is an impressive proposal for a new open air stadium on the existing GWCC compound.
http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/news/...?ed=2011-02-22&s=article_du&ana=e_du_pap

Basically, the proposal analyzed building a new stadium north of the GWCC where the existing Marshalling Yard and Yellow Lot is. Site Diagrams begin on Section II, Page 4.

$300 milion to restart Streets of Buckhead

The Atlanta Business Chronicle is reporting that Boston hedge fund The Baupost Group will provide $300 million in equity to restart “Streets of Buckhead.”

San Diego-based OliverMcMillan Inc. issued a statement Tuesday saying it had inked a deal to buy the proposed $1.5 billion luxury project on Peachtree Street. OliverMcMillan said it plans to begin construction this year.

The deal could close within 60 days.

"OliverMcMillan will begin its turnaround efforts in Atlanta immediately upon closing. The firm will work to evolve the architectural plans and reengage the leasing efforts on the development, leading to an additional $300 million investment and completion of the stalled project."

OliverMcMillan reaching a deal to acquire Streets of Buckhead likely means it has solidified an agreement with the equity partner, which will inject the project with new capital.

Streets of Buckhead has been financed with a combination of loans from Bank of America ($155 million) Wells Fargo & Co. ($45 million) and equity from CB Richard Ellis Investors ($169 million) according to Databank Inc., an Atlanta firm that tracks real estate transactions.

CB Richard Ellis Investors, based in Los Angeles, had a relationship with OliverMcMillan, which has been interested in doing a deal in Atlanta for the past three years.

I wonder if they considered the land directly across Northside Dr from the dome? It would be right by the Vine City MARTA station instead of a long, hilly walk from either nearby train station
