I see what you mean but the fact remains that it is really an industrial site meant for commercial marine operations. If the nearby businesses and residents want the site prettied up there is nothing stopping them from doing so.

Maybe local developers should chip in and beautify this dock area... as a way of giving back to the community.

If park and ride will increase rapid transit use, I support it. And the walking thing...when its nearly fifty below the wind..walking isn't enjoyable.

Everyone has this perception that "my city is special". "Winnipeg is Different" is horseshit. Statistically speaking the World has many cities like Winnipeg, and many of them use transit.

I see park and ride as a reasonable way to bank land until a suitable TOD proposal comes along... by that I mean mid-rise, mid-to-high density, not just two storey townhouses or whatever.

If you're talking about the empty lot on Markham, thats Waverly Heights, not Fort Richmond, and closer to campus.

Winnipeg Architect or ve4mm, photos above use this username, does have a valid point that this area needs some work. Think, how would you view it 5 years from now and go from there with the development occurring along Water Front Drive and the Exchange District.

Im not a boater so I really have no idea. But when I was a kid, I went on a friend's parents boat. We met at the dock and it appeared to have a lot of boats there. Where might this have been? Seemed like a bustling marina to me...

I don't believe the problem is with the docking facility, as I mentioned above and others have. It's the look of the area around it, appearance. Can it be improved.

There were six marinas in the city when I started boating around '86.

Royal Manitoba Yacht Club on Kenabeek Street in West St. Paul
Redboine Boating Club at the foot of Brandon Avenue
Point Douglas Yacht Club at the south end of the Louise Bridge
Anchor Boat Club just across Higgins from PDYC
Kildonan Yacht Club adjacent to the Kildonan Tennis club
Pritchard Boat Yard at the foot of Pritchard Avenue

The top two are the only ones left.

I just read online an article from somebody involved with the Point Douglas Yacht Club as I had never heard of it until now, and he said the high river levels since 1997 have contributed to the demise of most of the locations in Winnipeg.

Considering that the city has in many ways grown closer to the rivers over the past 30 years with the development of riverside streets and pathways, it seems that the culture of boating on the rivers has dropped off significantly.

For instance, cruise ships used to be a big attraction and are now barely surviving. I cruised on the River Rouge last year on a long weekend, and there was just a small handful of people on board, well below capacity. Same with personal boats... it seemed like there were many more of them on the rivers back in the 80s.

Large, trouble-free marinas at Gimli, Winnipeg Beach and several on the Lake of the Woods took a great many boaters from the river.

I feel it can be chalked up to today's short attention span. The river cruise boats are just too big a commitment. Gord Cartwright's business doing short tours out of the Forks took a lot of the cruise business.
