Very unfortunate that they couldn't be hidden within the spans themselves.

I'm actually quite glad Westfield requested for these to be installed. Just goes to show they are trying to bring back that "old WTC feel" (the concerts and such).

The cramped, pedestrian heavy space between the transit hub and 2 WTC hardly seems like the ideal place for a concert. Then again, I wasn't old enough to have gone to one at the old complex.

More from the Ny times article

Quote:
What did nearly $4 billion buy? Certainly an arresting structure, but one whose details do not match the shimmering images that Mr. Calatrava used to seduce officials a decade ago.

For instance, the ribs of the mezzanine looked sleek as silk in the renderings but in reality have the texture of stucco because of a fire-protective coating. Asked in March why no one had smoothed the surfaces, Mr. Calatrava’s office answered, “The client was not prepared to spend the additional money.”

Great pics Nexis4Jersey. I really like how the sunlight filters through the PATH rafters. Judging from the WTC Progress fb page comments, the hub engenders strong feelings, some negative but mostly positive. Just wait until this thing is finished and we get views from inside looking up and out.

Looking at the pics randy1991 posted, I'm wondering if the hub will ultimately be sealed from the outside by glass or if it's going to be open to the outside? If the latter, in the winter, it's going to be freezing in there, not to mention that you'll need an umbrella inside every time it rains. If the former, how will they get the glass up there without the cranes? I would imagine they would have installed it as the columns we're put in place.

It will be sealed with glass. A tower crane won't be necessary to install. They'll either lift the glass from the inside or bring a smaller crane on site to bring in the glass, but I assume it'll be the former.

The original design had the glass open when the weather was nice but the idea was scrubbed due to cost. Could have easily made this a 5 or 6 Billion dollar hub...

Slightly off topic, but I'm not sure if you've seen, the Port Authority made the suggestion recently to cut late night trains service from 1am to 5am. For some reason the people running the show think it would be a great idea to sever the only viable late-night mass transit option between Hudson county and NYC. They cite low ridership numbers, however that fails to consider the fact that it would essentially mean that anyone in the city past 1am would be effectively stranded there. I'm so glad they spent $4,000,000,000 on this hub just to consider severing the artery connecting NY and NJ down the line. Besides, everyone knows this whole transit hub is more of an upscale Westfield mall than it is a commuter terminal. /rant

This is so wrong. Yes, Oculus will be completely sealed, both between portal frames and at the upper roof. The roof is made of an operable skylight that will open on special occasions.

316 Liebher EC-H hammerhead tower crane is being assembled on northeast corner for skylight material lift. Contract for skylight was awarded to Enclos for $32M.
