There was nothing wrong with the previous set up. Tolling brand new pieces of infrastructure is perfectly acceptable in my book. The problem is this crazy scheme to toll every crossing. You can’t inpliment new tolls on old pieces of crappy infrastructure. There needs to be a reason for the toll

BC has a habit of being a con artist when it comes to tolls.

Which tolls specifically are you talking about?

Not the tolls themselves, but the toll company that managed them. They had really poor customer service, ripping their wallets off, and fill them with scam phone calls. It was basically a pyramid scheme.

A user in Google Reviews gave that company one star and made a response three months ago:

Quote:
Glad they removed the tolls and glad Translink can't steal people's money anymore; such a poorly run operation for a bridge that was never suppose to be tolled because it is a FEDERAL HIGHWAY.

I had my bills setup on automatic pay and they still told me when it came to renew my insurance that I owed them money; I had to fight tooth and nail to go back and show bill by bill and payment by payment that I was up to date and all I got was a "oh, our mistake, here is an override code"...that's it. Glad this whole operation is done (for the time being) and glad these stupid people who answer the phone are out of a job, NOT one person there was nice to deal with NOT ONE!!!!

Like everyone else have already said...wish I could leave "0" stars!!!

yeah, 1 google review from some loser on the internet isn't enough. clearly they are not all that great of a person being glad people are out of work, and also saying that they had no jurisdiction by it being a "federal highway." lol lol lol

in any case, tolls on new infrastructure is/and should be the way we do things. hell, we have done that going all the way back to the Lions Gate, 2nd Narrows, Massey Tunnel, etc.

tolling everything, that is just a tax grab.

This article is fantastic and he echoes my sentiment on the current embarrassing state of highway 99. He event uses the word value engineering which is bang on.

Looks like the government finally got it right with this bridge design. Look at those shoulders!

Highway 99 is an embarrassment, and the problem isn’t that the shoulders are narrow.... the problem is that there are literally no shoulders at all! They have been comically repurposed as bus lanes. The cobbled mess of the 99 is simultaneously an embarrassment to highways and transit.

I would definitely rank the 99 as our worst major Highway in the region now.

The fact that some people don’t think that any improvements (in this severe case, a complete rebuild is necessary) are needed on this corridor is beyond me.

Brilliant article! All of the stop-gap solutions are grossly inadequate and frankly quite dangerous. I know of no other tunnel in the world with oncoming traffic ( when counterflows are in ) in a narrow tube with no shoulders!

Embarrassment is an understatement to describe Hwy 99. It's an absolute joke. Everybody in this thread—and every road-related thread—are calling out the horribly inadequate road infrastructure here (the lack of shoulder lanes is one of them), but the fucknuts running this province will say "oh, it'll be more expensive" or "it's environmentally damaging". *slap* If you want to improve highways and bridges, do not cheap out and call it a day! I'm so sick of this province cheaping out on highway infrastructure.

They did put shoulder lanes on the Massey Bridge on this photo, although I won't be surprised that they'll discard them once they continue building the bridge and expand the highway.

Let's not forget that the state of Highway 99 is part of the reason why the Alex Fraser is so congested these days. Too bad Richmond's mayor is so shortsighted that he doesn't see that this situation is literally driving people away from living and working in his city. I work in Richmond and I have former coworkers who quit because of the commute from Delta and Surrey.

What's wrong with using the shoulders as bus lanes? There aren't enough buses to fill those lanes up so they still fulfill their purpose as a breakdown lane or a place to swerve into if you have to avoid a collision - while at the same time providing queue jumping for transit. They kill two birds with one stone at no additional cost. I fail to see a downside.

You fail to see bus lanes on the OUTSIDE lane, dissecting on and off ramps, being a problem???

it is a cheap stop-gap measure, but it is dangerous. the only reason it works as a stop-gap is they would have been replaced by 2022...

who knows now.

Well they sure can't use the HOV lane - cutting across four lanes is hazardous too.

Unless the government is willing spend more $$ making HOV-only exits too

There's a reason why Richmond's office market is the (small) size it is. If it wasn't for the tech office build-up in the 80s and 90s, much of what you see in Richmond would not get built now.

No, I don't see it as a problem. It's not like that lane is wall-to-wall buses, there's only the occasional bus and it doesn't take that much effort to speed up or slow down in order to cut in ahead or behind it.

I see a lot more people in the second lane dashing across the slow lane at the last second to make an exit than I see buses, and that's a LOT worse in my opinion.

Imagine a river crossing that ISNT the choke point. I would be happy with an 8 lane bridge if it turned out like this
