Looks like Tech has even more reason to go private since Tech largely relies on private funding for its new buildings and schools like GSU rely on the state. Good news, though!
You must be smoking rock if you think there is even a remote chance that Tech will go private. First off, I doubt it would be Tech's decision since it is a state school. Second, the Georgia legislature appropriates something along the lines of 3X% of the yearly operating budget of around a billion dollars.

Thirdly, the legislature also has appropriated plenty of money for buildings. The Marcus building was matched with state funds and the new undergraduate learning learning center was built mostly with state funds as was the CRC retrofit. You have to remember that even though Tech gets substantial donations there are usually substantial matching state funding to go along with that.

It is not in the state's interest for GT to ever go private so I seriously doubt it will happen in our generation or the next one. Is there even any precedent out there for this?

Cool, I could see that at the old Ford or the old GM plant. Both have awesome rail connectivity and plenty of available work-force.

Very Interesting.

The only catch to that is both the Ford and GM facilities have the high potential to be transformed to different types of areas once the economy is back on track. The Ford plant being so close to the airport and the old GM plant being perfectly positioned near Spaghetti Junction and Peachtree Industrial Blvd... Excellent connectivity.

The other side to this is... the Kia plant and the existing Hyundai plant are built in more rural areas where land is cheap. This allows them to build a facility from the ground up for the needs of their own manufacturing logistics. It also allows larger contractor companies they work with to build facilities next door on the same campus. They take up alot of space. They can build a rail connection spur as long as they are near a NS or CSX mainline. It might lower the competitiveness of choosing CSX vs NS though, since your stuck with whoever's mainline you build near.

Kinda slipped under the radar but ABC is saying a Courtyard, which at one point was slated to be a hotel Indigo, is opening today downtown in the 12 story Carnegie building. I drove right past this area yesterday and there was a ton of activity and the road off Carnegie was closed but it didnt look like it was about to open. That building has been vacant for as long as I can remember so it'll be cool to see it "alive". If I have time I'll walk down there and check it out.

I have noticed that some of these huge factories are located out in the middle of nowhere.

With the resurgence of Ford and GM does anyone think they might move back into Atlanta at some point? Read that Ford plans on adding jobs and capacity in 2011, nothing about new factories though.

If they do... I wouldn't be surprised if they built factories similar to that of Kia and Hyundai. "Near" Atlanta (aka the GA-AL state line...haha). Car Manufacturing has changed so much and is likely to continue changing... I'm afraid to say older facilities are only valuable if they can be easily gutted and/or retro-fitted...

It is kind of interesting to look at the history of industrial manufacturing in the region though. It has sprawled just as much as residential growth has. It started right outside downtown a long time ago... got built over... then built along rail lines circling town (aka the area they want to built the beltline around)... and in the last several decades huge industrial districts have popped up around the city as spurs of the CSX/NS mainlines coming into town.

Examples: Fulton Industrial Blvd (look at an aerial map... Also follow the train tracks)
Button Gwinnett Dr @ Bestfriend Rd
Mountain Industrial in Tucker
I-75 @ I-285 (south side of town near airport)

And now... unless it is a local distribution center.... It is just kind of... any cheap rural area as long as we have a freeway and a rail mainline to access.

New Kia plant (the facility isn't built, but you can see the footprint and land lot size)

Just to show the size the differences.... These are zoomed to the same scale.

I think the old For Plant is already gone for the initial phase of the "Aerotropolis" redevelopment. The thing is half of it will be parking lot for the airport. The other half will be a development trying to attract business that want to be close to the airport.

So the Courtyard Marriot off Carnegie is open, and there is a cafe intermezzo open there now.

Interesting picture of Shanghai from 1990 and today.

Is the first picture really from 1990? It is insane that Shanghai grew as fast as it did!

Check it out here.

Also, does anyone know why the lot for the previously proposed office tower at 4th and Peachtree was cleared and the former Center for the Visually Impaired demolished? It sat empty for so long that it seems odd to demolish it now if nothing is scheduled to start soon.

I heard March. It was discussed in a class of mine, but I can't remember the details. There is a sign on the chain link fence there that probably says.

UGH....what's with that giant empty plaza in front of this new building? They are building out a new, active space one block east at the ex-Village....and they could have easily continued that energy with an active streetwall farther west on North Ave. But instead there is a big dead space that will be no better than what is there now.

New restaurant at 180 Peachtree

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't see anyone report on this...

It's called Sweet Georgia's Juke Joint. Nice exterior signs.
