Don't know if it was mentioned yet but MEC downtown is open again. Apparently the new home office decided to keep it open and only close one in Calgary south.

What’s wrong with a few more shops. Lots have gone up on Calgary Trail across from the Terrace Inn. They look great. Better than what was there before that’s for sure. Stood as a vacant bush/junky spot for decades

Walmart is closing Edmonton (Abbotsfield). as part of a system over hall. The Edmonton one joins Calgary as the only 2 Walmart's closing in Alberta.

Wall mart is spending 500mil to upgrade the other starts and to build an Online fulfillment centre in Ontario.

Thai Express has closed in ECC. The Bay is shutting down on May 16. Walking through the mall at noon, it felt like a ghost town. With stores closing even in their vaunted Elevate Food Fair, the mall may as well just close down everything and turn all of it into a giant parkade.

I vote for turning it into a movie set, dedicated to zombie movies. Almost writes itself.

No.

That's the problem.

There are too many parkades.

When the Valley Line opens, downtown will markedly improve and become more people-friendly.

Agreed.

Even the stores that held perpetual "all inventory must go / closing soon" stores for the past 10 years have finally closed.

It's brutal. I don't know how it can continue even in a post-COVID world.

If memory serves correctly, the property management company presently has a job posting for a new GM. There could be lots going on behind the scenes that we're not aware of, particularly any plans for redevelopment or otherwise.

I was at WEM today, and it was far more livelier than the dying and depressing ECC - keep in mind that this is Monday noon at ECC and Monday mid-afternoon at WEM. I would say that WEM Phase I is quiet, but gets busy once you reach the Phase I food court. No lineup at the LEGO store, so I was able to walk in and browse to my heart's content.

This was always 555 Group's intention: kill downtown with WEM, leave them a 2nd rate alternative with ECC (Eaton Centre at the time). Nothing changes 30 years later.

They better have plans to demo and redevelop CC West and focus on filling/upgrading CC East. I know CC West has the Delta Hotel, but surely an existing office tower could be converted to accomodate a move.

I'd be interested to know if Delta is just the operator, and if so when that contract would be up. Does the mall owner still own the underlying real estate?
