Top 20 by population. Nashville is #21, Portland is #25, Detroit is #27

I plan on assembling a longer list but after the new year when full year numbers are available.

Those aren't in the top 20 biggest cities

I was just kidding.
These stats must be the number of homicides per 100k inhabitants or something.
I think that's their rate system over here.

I'm actually surprised that DC is still that bad, cause it's been widely gentrifying and the population usually goes more peaceful once it's made up of gentle (or cowardly) bourgeoisie. Lol.

But yeah, those stats need to get down to 0. Here in France, I think Marseille preforms the worst in that matter.
There would be serious gang war out there in their ghettos.

@ChiSoxRox I hadn't realized you'd computed the stats yourself. Good job or try at it. I wouldn't do it in my country. It would be depressing.
The French society is actually kinda violent. More so than you think.

Pas de soucis

DC surprised me too. The US is having a very rough past few years -- the social unrest, distrust of police, the pandemic stresses. I compiled the numbers since I saw Philadelphia had a higher count than NYC and was curious how the rates shook out -- and how safe NYC was compared to the other major cities.

Definitely a morbid list to consider. 3500 lives lost in those 20 cities combined so far.

Philly has had more murders then New York for the last I’d say 4-5 years. Phillys skyline may be growing but the shootings/stabbing a are increasing to how it was when I was growing up in the 90’s….bloody. I mean for the most part of my entire 28 years in life. Phillys generally a murder a day. 90s had numbers I don’t think we’ll reach, 600’s. I don’t have a doubt we’ll break last years record of 499, we’re currently at 432 murders, and over 1,730 shot. City government doesn’t care about murders if people are still moving here and our skylines changing.

By this time last year we had around 100 confirmed, so murder rate overall is down. However, there are more Deadly Shootings this year than last year and i dont think there ever has been such a high percentage before.

Drunken-murders, stabbings and domestic-murders are lower than ever i believe. But shootings involving young people and gang-members are at an all time high. So there has been a significant shift there.

For the second year in a row Malmö is under 3. This city generally for the past 10 years has had a total number of between 9-14 homicides/murders per year. so this is very good news!

Good police work or a change in the social climate there?

There have been big raids and the leaders of the two biggest fractions have been arrested thanks to french police who hacked "EncroChat". So its a joint operation between french and Swedish police.

I think that the media is overplaying murder levels in the USA - numbers are up because they dropped so much and so fast between 1994 and 2016.

For the record, Quebec City - 1, metro area - 1 (Population - 800,296 - 2016).

Also, with regard to that list of Canadian cities, 2017 at 10 included the 5 murders at the mosque and 2020 at 7 excludes a double homicide just outside the city limits of 2 kids by their father in St. Apollinaire, Quebec.

Portland broke its all-time records for homicides in a single year after a double murder near downtown:

Suspect arrested in Old Town double murder investigation

Quote:
Police said these are expected to be the 71st and 72nd homicides of 2021 in Portland.
That surpasses the previous record of 70 homicide cases set in 1987. It's quite a stunning and rapid decline for a city that had 14 cases in all of 2013.

sadly, my neighborhood just recorded its first murder of the year.

it seems a bit weird to say "first murder of the year" on Oct. 25 in a city that has seen around 700 homicides so far this year, but Lincoln Square is definitely not one of chicago's hot spots for gang violence. it's only the 3rd homicide in the neighborhood since we moved in nearly 4 years ago.

apparently 2 dudes from one car shot at 3 dudes in another car all heading south in the 5300 block of N Western Ave. around 5:00am this morning, killing the driver, who then crashed into a building. the other two passengers survived the attack/crash. the assailants fled the scene, no arrests have been made. no other details are available at this time.

Western Ave. is one of the most major N/S streets in chicago, running nearly 24 miles straight through the entire city, and it splits Lincoln Square in half, so it's entirely possible that this was gang stupidity spillover from another neighborhood.

Austin, TX is extremely high this year. If this trend continues the area may hit 100 homicides once this year ends.

Quebec City just had its 2nd murder of 2021. It happened on October 26.

It appears that a drug dealer was stabbed by another man who is known to the police.

Also, with regard to that list of Canadian cities, 2017 at 10 included the 5 murders at the mosque and 2020 at 7 excludes a double homicide just outside the city limits of 2 kids by their father in St. Apollinaire, Quebec.
Huh?

So because murders exploded in the 1970s and 1980s and then went down to more normal numbers we shouldn't worry about heading back towards 1990 numbers? That makes no sense. You should always report and worry about a negative trend.

I think you're right.

Also some US cities are also posting all-time record murder numbers (even higher than in the wild 70s-80s-90s).

This is not something that should be swept under the carpet.

Things are really out of control in Chicago. São Paulo (capital) has 12 million inhabitants and registered 299 homicides between Jan-Jun 2021. It will end the year around 600 as opposed to 800 (?) of Chicago, with a population 5x smaller.

São Paulo has became a safer city after the crazy late 1990's, but it's still Brazil, a country that's widely regarded as violent.
