Yes, I live right near there, it’s definitely 360.

I remember looking at that vantage point off of 360 back in 1999 when my mom worked off of Westlake Blvd as a housekeeper. I remember thinking to myself as a 15 year old how cool it would be to see it filled with big buildings. Now here we are.

Here's a pic I took from the same location 20 years ago. Not quite the same angle but close. No homes in the foreground back then.

Crazy. I know everyone laments the changing scenery of the Rainey area but honestly that Rainey bar culture only popped up in the vacuum that occurred due to the Great Recession after the whole area was rezoned for development. I do hope it can be integrated, though, as much as possible.

Was watching the Dell Match Play and they had some fantastic live aerial views of DT. Man I couldn't believe how tall and dense the skyline looked. So refreshing. Typically it's old stock vid from 5 years ago.

I remember walking around DT one Hot Sunday in 1993 when I first moved here. I walked Rainey and ended near the old Liberty Lunch on 2nd St. when a hot gust of wind blew paper and dust into my face. I thought how barren and desolate parts of DT were and wondered when Austin would get a true Skyscraper (150m, 490') vs. other tall High-rises. My thoughts were; It will take 30 years for Sleepy Austin to Rise to the occasion.

Wow was I naïve. 2004; only 11 years with The Frost Tower came quick; And Austin has not looked back.

We stayed with my brother back in 1994 when my dad had to be in Mexico to be with my grandpa in his last days. Our church at the time was on Holly St and Chalmers. Church is still there. My brother would take me to mow the lawn there. At one point he lived on the street across from there. I was 10 back then. I wish I could've wandered off to see what it was like back then. I only have my memories from that block and we never bothered to venture into Rainey. I just know it was all residential back then. My dad was the one who knew that that neighborhood would eventually turn up. Now I get to tell him all about it since he's now the one who doesn't venture much into the city. But he was right.

I have to think that if old Rainey was still there, it would probably contain quite a few houses in disrepair due to their age and the original quality of construction at the time. I'm not sure many people who lived there could afford any major repairs to their houses. It could very well be an eyesore as opposed to what we have and getting today.

Yes, of course The only buildings that are barely visible were the Holiday Inn and Towers of Town Lake. I remember driving down Rainey Street on several occasions in the early 2000s and it seemed that most of the homes were either abandoned and/or in some level of disrepair. Probably by that time plans were already in motion to rezone/redevelop the district.

The pic probably belongs in the historic pictures/videos thread but it's still relevant since it provides some context to the current developments.

Downtown this morning once the clouds started clearing up. If you look close enough, you can see the Domain! Also, 6x looks like its about to officially become the tallest building in Austin.

That would make for one of the coolest stadiums in the US. Imagine outfield facing the skyline. It would be somewhat similar to PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The thought of the traffic in that area is what nightmares are made of though. The traffic around Q2 is atrocious on gamedays, and the normal flow of traffic around there is probably much less than SoCo and downtown.

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but what are the chances we start seeing high-rises like those on Rainey, on the other side of the river?

There's a proposal to redevelop the Statesman site next to the Congress bridge, it's like ~5 towers up to around ~500 in height. Search down the forum, there's a thread on it. It seems to have the city's buy-in, so things are looking good for it.

Otherwise everything would need rezoning and would be fit with fierce neighborhood opposition. Travis Heights is notoriously one of the most fiercely NIMBY neighborhoods in town.

The Statesman site and surrounding area is already set to have a lot of stuff, but I can't recall the height limits off the top of my head.

It's worth hunting down the south shore plan, which lays out where the city (generally) believes taller buildings can and should go. I don't think there's any real chance of Rainey-style height . . . but we could still get some significant 500 footers on the Statesman site, as MyBrain notes. I think most of it will look like the RiverSouth building.

EDIT: here are a couple of pics of where things are probably headed:

Checkout the 305 S. Congress thread for the latest info on that:
