I follow this Taiwanese channel called Asianometry whose focus is on asia and chips.

With SEMICON West coming to Phoenix from San Francisco (maybe alternating years) and geting massive more attendees which was a story by itself, he finally came to Phoenix to discover what's going on in Arizona.

Worth a watch (there were some things I hadn't realized) and always nice to see AZ get some positive press.

I really enjoyed watching this. Very insightful and measured enthusiasm. The enormity of this investment in Phoenix boggles the mind.

FWIW - TSMC is close to finalizing purchase on another very large parcel of land near their existing campus. The AZ facility has such strong demand, they are putting their foot on the accelerator and we'll see even more soon.

Quote:
Wei also said TSMC is close to securing a second large plot of land close to its Arizona site to provide more flexibility in response to the strong, multiyear AI demand.

"Our plan will enable TSMC to scale up to an independent Gigafab cluster in Arizona to support the needs of our leading-edge customers in smartphone, AI and HPC [high-performance computing] applications," he said. Gigafab refers to chip facility clusters that can at least churn out more than 100,000 12-inch wafers a month.

TSMC Arizona expansion plan jumps to $465bn under proposed US–Taiwan tariff deal

Business news | January 14, 2026
By Brian Tristam Williams

Quote:
TSMC is reportedly preparing a major new phase of its US build-out that would take its total Arizona spend from $165 bn to $465 bn, as part of a proposed US–Taiwan trade deal that would cut tariffs on Taiwanese exports to 15%. A Reuters report, citing the New York Times, says the package is still being finalised, while a separate Reuters update says Taiwan has reached a “broad consensus” with the US on tariff talks and is working towards a concluding meeting.

Under the reported plan, TSMC would add at least five more manufacturing facilities in Arizona on top of the projects already announced. That would bring the overall roadmap to around 11 fabs, alongside two advanced packaging plants and a local R&D centre. Neither the US side nor TSMC has publicly confirmed the $465 bn figure or the precise mix of process technologies for any additional fabs beyond those already disclosed.

Downtown Skyline

Downtown still looking short but definitely more girthy. View from The Camby in the Biltmore area.

anyone know when the maricopa assessor map will be updated with 2026 imagery? they were very quick last year, but i wouldn't be surprised if some kind of funding got cut off since then.
