A pretty interesting but not well-known fact about the Ctrain is that Calgary Transit claims that it is powered 100% by renewable energy, mostly from a turbine field down near Crowsnest Pass.

Yay! Hamilton enters a new era on public transit...

UPDATE: Bus-only lane launches on King Street

http://www.thespec.com/news-story/4169889-update-bus-only-lane-launches-on-king-street/

The north side lane of King Street is now a designated transit lane

A King Street lane designated for public transit vehicles including HSR buses is now in partial operation.

The city said Wednesday morning that the transit-only lane pavement markings along King have been completed up to Locke St.

Upon completion, it will include Mary to New streets - which is one block east of Dundurn.

Motorists should drive according to pavement markings and signage, the city said; adding city crews will continue with street markings and unveil signage beyond Locke.

A perfect excuse for me to make a trip out to Hamilton and check it out!!

I can check out Hess Village and Ancaster while I'm there.

I think I'm going to head up and check out the viva bus lanes today, so I might get some crappy iPhone pictures from the bus!

I'm actually wondering the same. It's supposed to only be the North (right) lane of King Street. Maybe the sidewalk bumps out a lane at King and James but I can't remember. Either way, all I've seen on the mainsteam media sites about this is motorists bitching about the traffic chaos. Time to get used to living in a real city, not just a high-speed shortcut to somewhere else.

Probably two lanes here because this is where a lot of buses stop downtown before they start their next route so they are there for a couple of minutes.
The two lanes are to make sure the buses can get out of the right lane easily without waiting for traffic to let them in.

The transit lane gives Hamilton more of a big city feel in my opinion.

I'm surprised how small some towns are with half decent public transit. Deseronto Ontario has less than 2000 people and a public transit service (it's aparently vans, but still). (At least according to Wikipedia)

Looks great. Now if only the transit tax can get passed and the LRT can be built.. The Bus lanes on Yonge north of Finch are insane, there will usually be 3 or 4 buses waiting in the lane at red lights. If you were to stand on the curb a bus would pass you probably 7-8 times a minute.

Is there a good chance the tax will be passed? I haven't been following it. It is a great idea, worked for BC.

Good chance it'll become an election issue when the Liberal minority government present the 2014 budget in the Spring.

Nobody really knows. It depends how against it the NDP are. It's one of the most important issues for Wynne, and she has stated she is willing to go to an election to get it passed, so I know it won't be dropped from the budget. If the NDP are willing to make concessions for it, and are still willing to prop the liberals up for another year, it will pass. The PCs have wanted nothing to do with this government since day 1, and have been calling for an election since the day after the election, so they won't help. Really, it is up to the NDP to pass it, and they have been mum on what they want to do when it comes budget time in the spring. I encourage everyone living in Ontario to contact their MP to voice their support, ESPECIALLY if they are an NDP.

I would have my family contact their MP but unfortunately Woodstock is firmly within the stranglehold of the conservatives. I really hope it passes. Alberta could use a transit tax too, especially considering it has two rapidly growing metros over 1 million and two rapidly growing burgeoning metros over 100 000.
