The Ian Fowler Oval on the plaza in front of the Avenir Centre will officially open this Friday at 3 PM.

Hours will be 10 AM - 10 PM daily, and the season is expected to last until late March. The skating surface will be illuminated by floodlights after dark. Music will be provided for people to skate to. The ice surface will receive a minimum of two floods daily with a dedicated Zamboni.

They've added a tall metal christmas tree lit up in green in front of the oval. A nice touch.

If something is going on, you can watch it in real-time from the top of the zamboni hut.

Gates at the large parking lot on foundry (heritage court) have been installed on all entrances.

Its expected that in January the lot will switch to a paid parking model during non business hours. I believe they are just waiting for the pay terminals. Not sure if they will charge $10 for events like the others nearby or go cheaper to encourage people to use their lot.

One interesting thing I noticed is that some lots change their pricing based on event. For example the lot at the V Hotel charges $10 for Wildcat games but had their sign up as $20 for Jack White.

The Foundry lot is truly massive. This move should go a long way to alleviate any residual parking concerns for the Avenir Centre.

Things have gone remarkably smoothly so far. My only residual concern is that during the winter, as the snowbanks grow along the curbs and the streets progressively narrow, a lot of the on street parking downtown will disappear. If the Foundry lot becomes available, then this problem should go away.

Yeah, I suspect snowbanks will make the most impact on "cheap" (IE: on-street-city-provided) spots. The city will plow them as per normal schedule. In private paid lots, if they are charging $10-20, you can bet their motivation to keep it clear will be high.

I see that the Roar Store exterior signage has been installed on the front facade of the Avenir Centre - very nice.

Still no sign of the Tim Horton's concession on the concourse.......

New Moncton skating oval officially opens
City hopes oval will provide 100 days of skating per winter
Jordan Gill · CBC News · Posted: Nov 23, 2018 9:20 PM AT | Last Updated: 2 minutes ago

There's a nice little video embedded within this CBC article.

Quote:
"Our goal this year is to get 100 days of skating in on the outside rink," said Somers.

Somers said the rink became a priority for the city after the Avenir Centre became a reality, adding they knew they could do something interesting with the outdoor space.

The Moncton oval has a refrigeration system that should help keep the ice from melting when temperatures go above freezing.

The way this winter has being going, 100 days this fall/coming winter should not be an issue.

I'm told by a user that helmets aren't mandatory for adults.

The Avenir Centre has just been nominated as one of the "best new concert venues" in North America for 2018.

https://www.telegraphjournal.com/tim...urce=story-top (paywall)

There are four other venues in the competition, all American, including the Metropolitan Opera House in Philadelphia.

Publicity like this will only be helpful in attracting top notch performers to the venue.

That's very impressive and cool.

I don't love the name Centre Avenir Centre, but the facility is outstanding! Most people in Moncton are not even sure how say it. All I hear is the events centre, events centre, events centre...
Naming rights or not, I'm French and I think that they should've come with a more bilingual name. Goes to show.

I don't think I have any problems pronouncing the name, but then again maybe I don't realize that I'm butchering it.......

The name doesn't bother me at all really.

I think the reason why people still might be tempted to call it the "events centre" is that that is the name the arena was referred to for several years before the naming rights were granted. It'll take a little while for things to change.

AVENIR CENTRE NOMINATED AS BEST NEW CONCERT VENUE BY POLLSTAR

Despite being open for only a few short months, Avenir Centre is already being recognized by industry leaders in the entertainment world. Early this week, Los Angeles-based concert trade publication Pollstar announced that Moncton’s new sports and entertainment centre has been nominated for their 2018 “Best New Concert Venue” award.

After opening the venue on September 12th with Keith Urban’s sold-out Graffiti U tour, the schedule of events has been full. Thus far Chicago, Aqua, John Mellencamp, Jerry Seinfeld, Paw Patrol, Jack White, and Cirque Musica have all taken the Avenir Centre stage. On the sporting side, in addition to the Moncton Wildcats and Moncton Magic, UFC Fight Night and The Thank You Canada Tour were also held this fall.

“Since opening the doors we’ve had had a lot of success and garnered a lot of attention in a few short months,” said Nick DeLuco, SMG Canada’s General Manager of the Avenir Centre. “Quite simply, this nomination shows that Avenir Centre is already on the radar amongst industry professionals and that Moncton, and Atlantic Canada, is being recognized as an important market for the touring industry.”

Avenir Centre joins a distinguished group of nominees for Best New Concert Venue along with The Sylvee (Madison, WI), FiServ Forum (Milwaukee, WI) Pier 17 At South Street Seaport (New York, NY) Metropolitan Opera House (Philadelphia, PA) The Armory (Minneapolis, MN), Elsewhere (Brooklyn, NY).

Pollstar is a music industry trade publication covering the worldwide concert industry. Each year the publication hosts the Concert Industry Awards. The nominating committee is comprised of over 2,000 industry leaders in all facets of the entertainment business including venue managers, artists, tour managers, agents and promoters from across the country and abroad. Winners will be announced at the Pollstar Live! conference on February 13th at the Beverly Hilton in California.

Heading into 2019, Monctonians will have the chance to catch Canadian music icon Bryan Adams, Broadway musical Rock of Ages, Corey Hart, Old Dominion, Professional Bull Riding and - for the first time ever in Moncton - Cirque du Soleil will be bringing its touring show Crystal. For further information on upcoming Avenir Centre events be sure to visit www.avenircentre.com or follow on social media.

I really like the name. It is unique... and not just another "Rogers" something or "Bell" other.
Now please keep in mind that I am probably the most unilingual person in the province, but I pronounce it "Av-a-near". How close am I?

Closer then most Uni-lingual English only speakers usually get from what I've been hearing. one being the wonderful adding extra letters, and massacre of linguist everywhere (ex: Ar-vur-ner).
