Simply removing the foundations will go a long way to making this look like a construction site.

First signs of progress:

Nothing on lower lot yet, excavation on upper lot. Also archaeologists working in upper lot.

Id assume there would be a lot of archaeological material there, must be fun to do those sorts of surveys. Does anyone know what used to be on the upper lot?

That is a good question! Aside from the midtown, that block has been vacant for quite some time. Maybe we can take a look at NS Archives pictures and see what is there!

Not sure where I found it but I've seen a picture of the upper lot from around 1920 or so. I think it had some houses and a small brick building similar to the one with Strange Adventures across the street.

These blocks have been developed since the mid-1700's, so they have many layers of history and could yield a lot of pieces similar to what was found at the library site or on Salter Street.

Here is a excerpt from the 1878 Atlas of Halifax that shows a 51 Argyle Street, but no 50. It looks like there is a hotel and carriage factory where 50 would be.

This address is on the block where a new convention centre is being planned. The Entire block is currently vacant, so I think it's safe to say that the 50 Argyle no longer exists.

There was an item on CBC News tonight showing that the archaeologists have found foundations and a fireplace from an 18th/19th century house. They were very excited. Must be an awful gig knowing that once you've documented it all it will be wiped out.

Thats one of the real shames with developing in such rich areas historically. I hope what ever they find is at least well documented and the findings available for public viewing.
