I heard on Facebook that the old White Spot building downtown was torn down. I'm glad I got a photo of it the other day. I'm really looking forward to the development to start.

This was a photo posted on Facebook the other day. Kind of a cool old photo. There looks like there use to be an island in the inner harbor with a building on it. Does anyone know what this is or if they blasted the island?

Thanks Newstart ... I should have figured that out. Cool old photo though.

They've started to tear down the University Heights Mall this week. I was glad I drove through there a couple of weeks ago and took some photos. Should be quite the development.

With Capital Iron closing that section of street will definitely change. Though the buildings are historic the amount of residential going in and the new art gallery should liven it up at night.

I walked into Capital Iron and felt it was a shadow of what it used to be. I asked one of the staff if they were closing down. That was a day or 2 before it was announced.

I did like the looks of the Iron works building.

Didn't end up walking around Victoria when I was there. spent more time up island or just walking along the ocean. Great way to clear the mind.

It was a shock to my sister in-law that Capital Iron was closing, guess there was no warning for long term staff like herself. She had worked there for 30+ years.

On another note it will be weird not seeing University Hights Mall standing had many "firsts" there, one being first job @ K-Mart!

Here's a cool old video from 1987 I believe of Vancouver Island. Some Victoria shots towards the end of the video. The conference center is under construction.

Here's an interesting article. Victoria has the third highest one bedroom rental rates in the country. Mostly due to the fact that there's not enough new units being built for the influx of people.

Here's a couple of photos of Hatley Castle I took a couple of years ago. Located in the municipality of Colwood. It has the most beautiful gardens there too. Sunken, Rose, Japanese gardens and more. They film quite a few movies here like X men and Smallville...

Been to Victoria a good 20 times, but never been to Hatley Castle. I definitely need to get there one of these days.

Went to Mayfair mall today and caught a glimpse of the skyline - it appears the CIBC logo has been changed again on the commerce tower if my eyes aren't mistaken

EDIT: It sure was changed! Photo from @zem__photography on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/zem__photography/

I noticed that name change a while back. Nice hearing from you again MW...

I did a walk around Victoria this afternoon with my good friend Zoomer. It was a nice but kind of a colder day. I took this photo of the Coho arriving downtown.

Man you must have been a kid when you got that job because it's been a long time since Kmart was there. I remember when I was a kid we briefly lived in Gordon Head and I used to ride my bike to Kmart and hang out there in the '70's

I don't know how many more units the city can greenlight because we've been building at a breakneck pace for years. 10 years ago I didn't think I would ever see a new tallest go up in my life as Orchard House held that title for almost half a century yet the three tallest buildings in the city have all been built in the last 8 years. The building boom is also the reason Victoria has such a low unemployment rate so I think on this front the city is doing a good job

The CIBC Building turned into the CGI Building a few years ago and it seems now they share corporate logos with CIBC on two sides and CGI on the other two which i've never seen before on any building. If anyone cares CGI doesn't stand for Computer Generated Images but rather Consultants to Government and Industry

The city needs to address the increasing amount of tagging on heritage buildings.

I totally agree with you Phil. I remember when I was much younger, early 90's, phoning the City planning department (I believe it was) and asking why the city wasn't building taller buildings. They gave me an answer about keeping views of the Olympic Mountains and to protect the views of the Cathedrals. They said that the city would never allow taller buildings again. On Facebook... I posted a photo of the Falls Building yesterday and "Holden" mentioned how all of our hard work helped make that building get approved. I remember my grandmother went to that council meeting and spoke in favor of The Falls development too. It was such a funny but great comment she made. Even years after that Mayor Allan Lowe had brought that up to me and would ask me how she was doing... I really miss going to council meetings and being active at city hall but I still write in emails of support for new projects that come along. Lisa Helps would almost always respond to me... It will also be interesting to see how this new council reacts to some of the taller proposals coming down the line as well. Hopefully they get approved. Especially the London Drugs development.

Yes, he will have to work much harder on coming days, at tax-payers' expense of course.

I went to uptown mall today and took a quick two photos of Victoria's skyline. Too bad it was later in the afternoon. A little darker outside.

I was walking through Victoria a couple of Sundays ago and I saw this place mat for sale in a souvenir shop. I couldn't believe how old this photo was. The Y lot isn't developed or Shoal Point in James Bay, no dockside Green in Vic West... Weird they'd sell such an old photo definitely from the 90's. They city has changed so much since this photo...
