Might be difficult (and dangerous) - that portion of Main is four lanes and fairly high speed. It would be safer if the drop off was off the roadway.

Perhaps there will be space to expand in the future. I'm also glad to see that it's 6 storeys tall.
That makes this comment by OUIR@random very interesting.

If Home 2 Suites is truly often associated with Double Tree properties, then this just adds a little more credence to this possibility......

I guess the drop-off lane could be separated from the sidewalk and street by a small barrier to protect from the traffic. Simply removing the small lawn and surface parking would allow for the building to be moved forward quite a bit.

That sounds like a street design problem.

Why are we letting streets dictate building design when it should be the other way around?

Main Street is a major east/west thoroughfare. It remains that way until some traffic is able to peel off (towards the north) on King Street, and towards the south on Assumption Blvd. It's only beyond this point (westbound) that Main Street adopts a truly urban character.

I agree that we shouldn't (in general) allow street design to trump urban planning, but as always, there are exceptions, and in this particular case, there is very little option in redesigning this section of East Main Street to allow for traffic dampening.

Though I know construction threads involve a lot of speculation, this is one project, we shouldn’t get our hopes up for. My trust was eroded after his last proposal went know where and sadly I think he is grasping at straws here. I mean don’t get my wrong, this looks like an amazing proposal, but why didn’t you attempt this years ago, why wait until now when there are currently 3 new hotel developments on the tables/ U/C.

I would love to see it go through, but don’t have much faith, especially after the toilet paper fiasco.

Victoria Park Fountain replacement:

Awhile back the city brought forward two fountain concepts to replace the old one at Victoria Park. I inquired of the city back in June as to the status of this project. Here is their reply:

QUOTE: " City of Moncton‏ @CityofMoncton Jun 21

The community picked the 3-tiered fountain option. We are in final stages of design, construction expected to start in mid September"

Has anyone any information on this or has it been placed on hold yet again. That current fountain looks so bad I hope it is replaced soon.

The project was put back a bit not sure to when but they where doing some work, and found issues as they usually do when they are replacing old things with new.

Photo recently posted on Retail Talk & Share, showing Queen Street paved in front of FiveFive Queen, but with the old utility poles still in place. These will be removed at some point as the services will now all be underground. I agree that these poles will be gone within the month.

To be honest this is actually pretty exciting, seeing the road being paved and knowing the lines are soon going down is great. I hope they see the benefits and work their way down queen even further.

VICTORIA PARK FOUNTAIN UPDATE:

I finally received an answer from the City with regard to the replacement of the fountain at Victoria Park.

"The project was tendered in the summer but no bids were received. It will be re-tendered for spring 2018 construction."

So, that's it for now. I do hope it will be replaced next year.

Improvements to tiny Moncton park to cost taxpayers up to $300K
Gérald-Leblanc Park, in front of Moncton City Hall, will include seating, a water feature and public art
By Vanessa Blanch, CBC News Posted: Oct 26, 2017 12:39 PM AT Last Updated: Oct 26, 2017 12:46 PM AT
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/moncton-city-hall-gerald-leblanc-1.4372819

The space formerly occupied by the skating surface in the wintertime on the NE corner of Main/Botsford adjacent to the city hall plaza has been renamed Parc Gerald-LeBlanc Park. A $300k upgrade is planned:

Quote:
Joanne Duguay, Moncton's cultural development officer, said the grass area in front of City Hall, which has been used as a small outdoor skating rink, will be removed and replaced with paving stones and 25 metres of granite and concrete seating.

"The skating area will be going to the Downtown Centre plaza so there is a brand new skating rink that's being built that will be available for the public next winter."

The space will be lit at night and include chairs and tables that can be rearranged.

"We have a large plaza space that has informal, make your own seating so tables and chairs that you're able to move and adapt — do it any way you want."

A piece of public art, at a cost of between $2,500 and $3,000, is also planned for the park, although that money isn't in the current budget.

The city hopes the park will be ready in time for the Congrès Mondial Acadien in August of 2019.
It appears the current trees on the site will be preserved (which is important to me). I have always believed there isn't enough public space in the downtown core, so I appreciate this project. With the plaza in front of the events centre, Downing Street, the Riverfront Park and now this extension to city hall plaza, the city continues to make great strides in creating new public spaces in the downtown area.

Vanessa's headline seems like CBC wants to stir up some controversy.

Yeah, it's certainly phrased as a "BIG NUMBER" implying "GOVERNMENT WASTE", but really, for such a project, that almost seems cheap nowadays. Public spaces are important to have and maintain, and by the looks of it, that should be a nice revamp for that courtyard space, for a decent cost even.

There is a rumour out there that these three houses on the SW corner of the Queen/Alma intersection have recently been sold to the same individual.

Any thoughts out there as to what may be afoot? Is this land being consolidated for some purpose???
