Pretty exciting time to be a part of the Kelowna community on the building front.

With One Water topping out and the new tallest already proposed, its going to be a different town in 10 years.

Plans final for old RCMP site

https://www.castanet.net/news/Kelown...been-finalized

Castanet - Wayne Moore
A long-term lease agreement between the City of Kelowna and Rise Commercial Developments have been finalized, paving the way for development of a mixed-use project on the former RCMP site on Doyle Avenue.
Once complete, the development would become one of the first building blocks in the city's vision for what is known as the downtown Civic Precinct, which stretches from Queensway to Clement avenues and Water to Ellis streets.
The city will be paid $7 million for the initial 80-year lease, of which $4.3 million will be reinvested into the site for development of a new civic plaza, extension of the Artwalk, as well as a 6,000 square foot community amenity space.
Strategic land development manager Graham Hood says that investment will bring forward "key elements of the Civic Precinct Plan... without a direct impact on taxation."
Hood says work is already underway to look into the feasibility of establishing a new creative hub within the community amenity space.
That hub could accommodate a wide range of creative activities. A full report will be brought to council for consideration later in the year.
"We’re seeing exciting new elements on the horizon as downtown Kelowna continues to grow in step with our city,” said Hood.
“With many new residential units in the pipeline to strengthen downtown housing needs and a new downtown UBC Okanagan campus being developed, adding to our renowned waterfront parks, active transportation corridors and eclectic food and beverage and retail sector, this development is another step in ensuring downtown Kelowna is an attractive place to live, work and play into the future.”
One of the next major projects within the plan will likely be the future of the community theatre site.
The community theatre is earmarked as the site of a future performing arts centre.
The city says the site can accommodate a larger auditorium and more extensive front, and back of house amenities. Money has been set aside in this years budget to research a range of funding sources and partnership opportunities.

Landmark District

Here is a good read from last year. Explains alot about why the Landmark District has developed outside of the downtown core.

Its amazing how fast the North end is transforming and creating a nice "core" of towers, and to see the city transforming in such a fury before our eyes is incredible.

I was getting disappointed with the grey of winter and photos I was taking, but noticed how well the glazing of the newer towers blend into the surrounding winter colours and mountainous landscape.

With no context I could easily mistake that picture for a neighborhood of Vancouver.

Mission Group started demolition today for The Block (office tower) portion of Bernard Block.
It’s going to be exiting to see this one get started and see Kelowna’s first downtown office tower!

Serious?? This is going to be exciting to watch! My guess is they will be constructing the residential tower at the same time?

On a different note, do you think the provincial government will ever proceed with the Boucherie Interchange project?

I drove by today but it looks like the building they demolished is at Bertram and Bernard as opposed to St. Paul and Bernard. Isn’t the Block supposed to be on the St. Paul end of the property and the Bertram on the Bertram end? (Legitimately asking here as I am not totally sure).

I actually haven’t seen the demolition in person ( lol ) I just it saw on Mission Group’s Instagram story yesterday.
You’re correct, the Block is on the corner of Bernard and St. Paul. My guess is they’re going to demolish the entire current buildings all in one go as the Block and Bertram have a shared podium.

In other news, the Costco relocation got approved today:

Council approved Leon Ave. development:
https://www.castanet.net/news/Kelown...s-to-Leon-plan

The tallest is to be 134.7 meters, Kelowna’s new tallest, and the developer hopes to start construction before the end of 2021.
Councillor Hodge’s comments are interesting... “ It's not right for Kelowna and I know that in my heart. I have no opposition to high rises in our community...but leave the downtown core and our waterfront alone.”
Not against high rises, but leave the downtown core alone?
