By my count we currently have 18 tower cranes up in London. Might be a new record. We have a number of proposals that haven't begun as of yet. Could we have maxed out the available workforce?

In White Oaks the Old Beer Store still hasn't been repurposed, which surprises me. It's been vacant so long the new beer store they built to replace it feels old to me lol.

Saw a sign up on Southdale immediately west of Finch Hyundai for a new Halo Wash car wash location. Looked them up, I think they will be the first location in London with a dual conveyor belt system rather than the rail you bounce off of to be pulled through. It's not touchless, but I think touchless washes are garbage anyway. They will also sell unlimited wash memberships for basically the price of 3 washes per month in each level of wash.

I know the city wants to densify but I don't see the problem here.

As far as I understand the LFP article, this development is WITHIN the urban growth boundary. It's not like the developer is asking for any changes to the boundary itself or even rezoning. Besides this the developer is going to pay for all the local sewage/water infrastructure with the city just providing the main corridor for hook-up and the the city is getting a badly needed new school.

I fail to see what all the controversy is about.

Looks like the LiUNA strike has crippled most project sites here in London too.

Kind of depends on how the urban growth boundary is defined. This land is actually outside what is the de facto urban growth boundary. The UGB was expanded to include this land under the condition it was only to be used for a cemetery. This proposal is obviously not a cemetery. So it's definitely outside the original, staff recommended and approved UGB when that was decided. Sort of sprawl by bureaucracy.

How and why is a cemetery included in the urban growth boundary in the first place? Like if this did become a cemetery we would be building within it?

The stupidity of that goes to show how messed up the planning was in the first place.

I agree that map above needs to be re-examined ASAP as the reality of where growth will happen was and has changed.

Yes, as mentioned above, the reason why this parcel of land is included in the UGB is that it was intended to be used as a cemetery. I'm not 100% sure if this designation was originally from the former London Township (pre-1993) or if this was a city designation.

Cemeteries can be designated as "Open Space" (the same designation for parks, etc), which in this case was the designation for this land.

When the city was developing the UGB in the late 90s (after the 1993 annexation, which included the lands north and south of Sunningdale), the city did not want to include this parcel in the UGB, but they were forced to after a provincial tribunal decision (source).

Auburn ended up buying the lands, and is obviously wishing to develop the land as a subdivision.

When looking at a map of the UGB (that jammer shared above), this specific parcel (which I shaded blue) certainly does look out-of-place, as this parcel is the only land included in the UGB, north of Sunningdale, and west of Wonderland.

I read in another article that the city will be revisiting the need to change the UGB either this year or next year, so we may see the UGB in this area being addressed.

It's about time Western decided to have a presence in downtown London. This looks like a great facility and one for all Londoners to enjoy. Added to this, those existing tenants will have to find new space lowering the overall vacancy rate for downtown. It's impact will be very small but at this point everything helps.

Harrison Pensa is currently moving into their new offices a couple blocks north in the RCMP building at Dufferin and Talbot. Will be interesting to see what, if any, type of renovation Western does to the outside of this building. I think Fanshawe did a nice job on Kingsmills, hopefully Western does something nice with this place.

Fencing going up around the old gas bar at NW of Oxford and Westdel Bourne. Likely in preparation for the demolition of the gas bar and removal of the underground gas tanks.

The address is 1919 Oxford St West and was going to have a gas bar and Wendy's. Apparently the Wendy's is no longer in the picture and Westdell Development is having a tough time finding a tenant.

I wonder if that is old info on their website or another change. I had commented on the York plaza thread that I was listening to a city council meeting about 6 months ago that mentioned they had pulled the gas station from the proposal with plans for more retail. Curious what they are really going to do there.

Edited to add, I clicked on the site plan on that page and it shows Wendys is still there, and the gas bar is gone.

Without the Operating Engineers (Tower Crane) workers many trades like Forming and Precast concrete can't work even if they ratify their deals.

Looks like the Forming and Precast sectors of LiUNA have settled their strike as have the Operating Engineers. Should see the high rise construction sites starting up again this week.
