Two words: Oil traffic
It really is connecting India/Pakistan/Bangladesh to Canada, and some religious travel to Saudi. That is what will dominate travel on Saudi as they ramp back up again in Toronto.

Oil traffic will be there, but be a small amount. There flights will look a lot like the other gulf carriers. Massive connectors to the sub continent.

The new International Connections Facility (ICF) is now open:

Connecting Made Easy as 1-2-3 New Facility at Halifax Stanfield Simplifies International-to-Domestic Travel

July 2, 2025

Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) has opened its new International Connections Facility (ICF), a key infrastructure project that will streamline passenger experience, expand cargo capacity, facilitate trade, and contribute to regional economic growth.

The new space allows international passengers on select flights who are connecting to domestic flights to move through the airport without exiting the secure area and reclaiming baggage. This will allow for shorter connections and more time to enjoy the airport’s amenities. The facility will also enable further expansions of aircraft belly cargo space, supporting the movement of goods between Nova Scotia and International markets.

Renovations to the ground floor of the existing International Arrivals area will continue through 2025. The area will be refreshed, and once complete, the full facility will support both increased passenger traffic and cargo capacity while enhancing Halifax Stanfield’s position as Atlantic Canada’s key gateway.

The ICF project was made possible due to the generous support of Transport Canada and the Government of Nova Scotia, who contributed $8.3 million and $3 million, respectively.

I've always liked plane spotting the Edelweiss A340. Word is the Edelweiss route here at YYC is moving to the A359 next summer. It'll be nice to see the A350, but I'll miss the A340.

The A350-900 will serve YHZ-ZRH next year as well.

WS is set to announce its new winter routes on Monday. And judging by this teaser from GDL I think its clear what one of them is.

I had heard of at least 2 others so guess we'll see

Do you know if they'll be announcing the complete winter schedule tomorrow as well?

It says in the media advisory they are, but only the 787 schedule was actually updated. Guessing it will be a formal announcement and the update will actually be loaded next week.

Should note there is a few new destinations being announced tomorrow, unsure about number of routes though.

Everyone wants a piece of the GDL action it seems. Let’s see if all these Canadian carriers from YYZ/YVR/YUL/YYC last on the route.

Let’s also see if the WS flight will overnight in GDL for optimum connections, similar to AC on YYZ-GDL.

AC connects well GDL with Europe both ways. TS on YUL-GDL is only good for connections down to GDL but not on the way back, because they don’t overnight at GDL and return back to YUL right away as a red eye.

It’s crazy how Flair was the first to go to GDL and people were skeptical of their route choice. Now everyone wants in on it.

Is there a statistic measuring the change in flights between Canada/Europe versus the US in 2025? Seems to be quite dramatic!

AC did start YYZ-MTY in October 2023, 7 months before Flair began GDL, so seeing AC at GDL isn't surprising. They were bound to launch the route, with or without F8 there. (MTY and GDL are the 2nd and 3th largest metro areas in Mexico, after MEX)

I am surprised a bit with TS and WS entering the market from their respective main hubs, however.

GDL is underserved to Europe. Air Canada can tap into that market from YYZ very well. TS should have done the same from YUL, but the return flight from GDL doesn't connect well with Europe, so the jury is still out on whether YUL-GDL will succeed. There might be just enough local O&D for the route to stick. Can WS say the same about YYC-GDL? Not sure.

YYC-MEX's track record has been pretty bad. WS only recently relaunched that route, so seeing them attempt GDL so soon after restarting MEX is a bit of a surprise. It might be they saw decent bookings to GDL via MEX, and decided to give the route a go.

However, unlike YYZ, YYC isn't well placed to capture GDL-Europe traffic, and WS is limited to NRT service in Asia in winter, so again, not much to go on. The route will rely mostly on O&D and domestic Canadian connections. With YVR and YYZ already having year round service with Flair, it will be interesting to see if TS and WS survive. Not too worried about AC. In fact, I can see them launching YUL/YVR-GDL as well, in order to kick out TS and F8 from the routes.

A few of the new destinations WS is announcing are kind of not what one would expect.

I’m also certain they won’t all be from YYC either.

I guess with the WG merger, anything is possible. One thing I wondered is if Sunwing was still around if they would have relaunched YOW-LIR. They served it one winter and with PD announcing it, may have wanted to compete on it.
