Maybe someone should come to Calgary and take the Eau Claire Market back to Saskatoon in pieces. In case you haven't heard, the 13 year old market has a date with the wrecking ball and is being totally rebult as a very upscale market with a luxury hotel (rumoured to be a Ritz Carlton), urban grocer, movie theatres, etc.

I also hope that Saskatoon gets a substantial building on the Extra Foods site. 7 floors would be a major disappointment even if something is better than nothing.

Disappointed about Tramps moving. I was there for the first time at their present location and was amazed at the selection of used music in the variety of formats. Not familiar with the new location at all.

/\ I think the new Tramps location will be plenty big enough for their impressive stock (sure, a lot of it was delete bin calibur, but the place was huge) but it's kind of isolated at 1st and 24th. Basically one will have to think "I'm gonna go to Tramps" rather than" Hey, Tramps, I'm gonna go in and browse" but I'm sure they'll press on.

I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of disappointed forumers re: the Extra Foods site. From what I've heard the plan is for a 'small' hotel though I will grant you my description is a little (a whole lot?) short on details. Let's hope I got it all wrong.

I can't help but think it would make more sense for a small hotel to be on Broadway and a 17 storey condo to be downtown....

Some Broadway discusion other than the Meridian (it seems to be becoming our "EnCentre"... which is kinda pathetic, but we're trying!):

Does any one know what's going into the formerr Pizza Hut location on Broadway? They've got some posters up in the windows but I haven't had a chance to look at them.

I understand that Outter Limits bought the building that HEL and Ed's vacated; anyone know if OL is moving there?

How about the building near the Meridian site that's for lease under Enzo Realty; it seems part of the that building has been leased. Anyone know the new tenant?

Broadway is kind of undergoing an overhaul of tenants... I hope some interesting stores pop up.

I do know some.

The Pizza Hut is going to become an Irish/Welsh/Scottish gift shop. No I am not making this up. I give it 6 months.

I have a drinking buddy from Amigos on the Broadway BID and she claims the former HEL is going to be ready by September. It was purchased by Outer Limits. I took a peek inside last night en route to Taste of Saskatchewan (some of the paper covering the windows is ripped) and it looks like they've done less than squat all inside. My Broadway BID friend also assures me that the building will be refaced. That's nice, cause it kinda looks like ass.

You are correct, only part of the Apex Graphic building has been leased As you can see here.
I was really pulling for a Video store. I really miss 49 cent video.

The former Robin's Donuts/Broadway deli is going to be a cheque cashing place. Who uses those things? They seem to be popping up as frequently as Spa/Salons.

That's about all I've got at the moment.

So Outter Limits is moving in there?

Don't get me started on those Cash Advance places....

Thanks for the info!

Well at least we can look forward to the "Meridian". Will be nice to have something going up on Broadway. It's a nice area to visit. Hope we hear something before the end of August.

Quick update, Persephone theatre released their plans to mixed reviews..... Some said it looks like a car dealership.... I kinda agree, but I am sure it will be nice once it is up and the new hotel is built. Now we just need that cultural centre....

I like the way they work a pick-up into the rendering. Very appropriate for this town.

I kind of like it. Looks nice. BUT,................What is taking so long with the Spa Hotel? It is taking forever,..............................been a long time since we heard anything. Can't possibly take that long to change the design. It's been like a year now.

BOO to the Government....

Plans to expand the Mendel Art Gallery delayed
2006-07-19
Author: Jim Mattern

Saskatoon's Mendel Art Gallery's planned expansion has been put on hold for at least a year.

Director Terry Graf says the delay has been caused by the apparent reluctance of the federal and provincial governments to help fund the 18 million dollar project. Graf says the city has already committed 4.5 million dollars, and the Expanding the Vision capital campaign is doing well. But he says the project can't go ahead without the assistance of the two other levels of government. Graf says not expanding and renovating puts the gallery's 5000 works of art, including the Lorne Harris painting donated by Fred Mendel in jeopardy of being damaged. The Harris painting alone was recently assessed at $2-million dollars.

The former church supply building is not officially rubble. They must have done last night or very early this morning. I wanted to watch, dammit. Hopefully I get to see Extra Foods go down. Though I suppose they probaby do this when there's no one around, considering the dinky fence they have up.

Literally seconds too slow Stewie. You gotta be fast in the information age.

Little (old) info on the River Landing Hotel/Spa:

"City OKs hotel/spa land deal" The Star Phoenix December 9, 2005

Remai Ventures to invest $40M on development The City of Saskatoon has worked out a tentative deal clearing the way for a hotel and spa complex at River Landing. Under the terms of a sales agreement going before city council on Monday, Remai Ventures will buy a 2.43-acre parcel of land east of Second Avenue for $1.6 million, and receive a total of $3.1 million in tax incentives from the city over the course of the hotel's construction and its first four years of operation. "It's going to be a great contribution not only to downtown but for the entire city, and it will be a great landmark for us all," Mayor Don Atchison said Thursday. "It's something that we're all going to be proud of." Remai Ventures expects to invest as much as $40 million in the development, which is expected to include more than 200 guest rooms, meeting and banquet space, a restaurant and lounge, retail space, underground parking and a mineral spa open to the public, not just hotel guests. According to the report going before council, the complex would create between 140 and 200 new jobs. The hotel's final design and appearance are subject to separate approval processes by both the city and the Meewasin Valley Authority. The tentative agreement stipulates that Remai Ventures must complete the building's foundation and underground parking by the end of 2008. Let's have a moment of silence for the wonderful departed former Church Supply Store.

Thank you.

So circle, care to expand on what you're hearing about the Extra Foods site?

And it's really sad to see a another wonderful piece of Saskatoon's rich architectural heritage torn down... Long live the Church Supply thingy.
