"City OKs hotel/spa land deal" The Star Phoenix December 9, 2005
Remai Ventures to invest $40M on development The City of Saskatoon has worked out a tentative deal clearing the way for a hotel and spa complex at River Landing. Under the terms of a sales agreement going before city council on Monday, Remai Ventures will buy a 2.43-acre parcel of land east of Second Avenue for $1.6 million, and receive a total of $3.1 million in tax incentives from the city over the course of the hotel's construction and its first four years of operation. "It's going to be a great contribution not only to downtown but for the entire city, and it will be a great landmark for us all," Mayor Don Atchison said Thursday. "It's something that we're all going to be proud of." Remai Ventures expects to invest as much as $40 million in the development, which is expected to include more than 200 guest rooms, meeting and banquet space, a restaurant and lounge, retail space, underground parking and a mineral spa open to the public, not just hotel guests. According to the report going before council, the complex would create between 140 and 200 new jobs. The hotel's final design and appearance are subject to separate approval processes by both the city and the Meewasin Valley Authority. The tentative agreement stipulates that Remai Ventures must complete the building's foundation and underground parking by the end of 2008.
