Does anyone know the approximate current height of the RSA Tower? How long is it until it surpasses Birmingham's Southtrust (ahem... Wachovia) Tower for the lead in height in the state?

Anybody see the picture that ran in todays Birmingham News that was taken by a Mobile Register photographer from the RSA tower's top, looking down on the Amsouth Bank Building (or was it the Marriott... the paper's in my car) surrounded by dense fog?

I can't find it online. I'll scan it tonight if I get a chance.

Yea, it was on the front page of the Metro section of the Register, I believe. It was a great photo... that's awesome that the News ran it, too.

The Register doesn't normally run pictures online, but they sometimes post front pages on the Register section of al.com

oh... and it is the AmSouth Bank Building, by the way.

Here's the photo. I'm guessing it was run bigger in the Mobile paper, and they probably actually proofread the caption for grammatical errors.

man, the Amsouth building has always been pretty ugly, but that pic gives it a whole new angle of ugliness. But a cool pic regardless.

Yeah -the building is pretty ugly. The broad side isn't quite as bad, but it's really a product of the time it was built.

agreed....its the ugliest building I have ever seen. The building they destroyed to build it was so pretty. But in those days they wanted "progress".

...and someday you'll wonder how you ever hated this classic late-modern style.

yeah, i know what you're talking about. the building you're probably referring to was the U.S. Customs House. i think it was built in the 1830's---had an antebellum look to it. it was just one of many beautiful structures lost to the slash and burn urban renewal that literally sacked downtown mobile. it was brutal.

Re: the Urban Renewal movement which wanted to tear out all of those ugly and obsolescent warehouse buildings we now inhabit as lofts.

Whoa! Great pic, thanks for posting! I'll definitely call Mobile Register and order a print of that pic. It's too good to pass up.

Exactly my thought, well said, Muskavon. I believe that one day soon, that building WILL get a facelift, since the consensus seems to be almost unanimous about its ugliness.

And it's gonna seem even uglier sitting next to the RSA Tower.
