They had 5,800 SRO for their opener against S.A. But most of those folks must have been from S.A. because they only had a few crickets show up for their next game against Phoenix.

What exactly is Bold FC, some kind of low level junior club league?

Unfortunately, it actually won't. Soccer clubs are almost religiously-obsessed with preserving the state of their field (they call it a pitch). In hearings with the city council, PSV was very specific about what the stadium could/would be used for and concerts were not on the list.

Outside of the stadium, sure, but not inside.

It sucks but I guess I understand it.

A digression from the topic at hand, I know, but I'm a sucker for spelling out the city name in the seats like this. I'm really hoping our stadium does it.

The stadium will definitely be holding concerts. It's being designed specifically to accommodate large outdoor shows, with a stage area located behind/underneath the supporters' section and some kind of coverings described for the field level. One of the design proposal documents had a section on concert configurations.

I don't think we'll see it as a regular venue for SXSW multi-day parties, but I would expect to see concerts scheduled pretty regularly when the team is away or during the offseason. Maybe you're thinking of City of Austin-sponsored events at the stadium?

Looks like Orlando got what Austin did not - a great view of its stadium set against the backdrop of its skyline...

Yep.

https://www.statesman.com/sports/201...tin-fc-stadium

"The same principle will apply for concerts. Three middle sections of the supporters end will be demountable — a series of aluminum bleachers that when pulled away will reveal a stage. The low ceiling is beneficial for sound, and will also allow for rigging sound and light equipment from above. The venue will have all the bells and whistles needed to get big acts in and out quickly, and the amenities to host an extra 5,000-10,000 patrons on the field during shows."

https://www.prosoccerusa.com/mls/exp...or-experience/

"Gensler is actually designing the section to transform back and forth between a safe-standing zone for soccer supporters and a stage for live music concerts. Grass playing surfaces suffer most in field-to-concert-venue conversions when stages are constructed on the field, Emmett said. Plastic panels laid over grass, by contrast, can be in place for several days and protect the surface from fans quite well. "

Sounds like as long as they can keep the stage off the field, they're not too worried about it.

Yeah, that blows. But, I'm just so pumped my kids will get to see a pro level team, at least for the US. Maybe it will look more like this Orlando stadium when the planned Domain buildings fill out their skyline.

Not entirely accurate, however, this could be PSV's preference. At least in London, Arsenal, West Ham, and Tottenham's stadiums host a number of concerts as does the Twickenham rugby ground. Wembley is the home of football, yet also hosts a number of concerts. These stadiums all in the London area hold greater than 60,000. Arsenal a few years back wanted to hold more concerts at their Emirates stadium but the local Islington (city) council turned them down and limited them to three concerts. In fact Liverpool FC is considering playing at least one of their offseason games at Tottenham's new stadium in London because their stadium (Anfield) is booked with concerts during the summer.

Closer to home, Toyota Stadium (Dallas FC) hosts concerts. Actually, the Off The Rails Country Music Fest (Luke Bryan, Jake Owen and Aaron Watson, etc) is tomorrow at the stadium and Jimmy Buffett used to have his Dallas concert there every year. There have been concerts at Houston Dynamo's BBVA stadium as well.

As a side note, every time I hear/see PSV, I immediately think of PSV Eindhoven from the Dutch first division league.

Yes. These are not good. To be fair, the match on 4/17 was a mid week game with bad weather. There was even talk of postponing the match.

When compared to other USL clubs, the Bold attendance is pretty bad. Other first year clubs (El Paso & New Mexico) are far exceeding the Bold in average attendance. El Paso and New Mexico both play their games in baseball parks near the city center.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_U...son#Attendance

I would consider going to a Bold match if I knew Epstein had anything to do with the change to SB1771, but our boy Epstein has a long way to go to get back in good graces with the local soccer community.

Well, the Crestview NA if officially peddling "fair play Austin" articles in their newsletter.

I love that the bottom of the site says "© 2019 Fair Play Austin -- Pol. adv. by Fair Play Austin PAC -- Top 5 donors: Bobby Epstein."

I was under the impression that the city was obligated to approve the rezoning (since they knew going in to negotiations that it was necessary).

though reading the contract, it does seem like the City Council could theoretically reject it.

http://www.austintexas.gov/sites/def...nt__Final_.pdf

"Subject to standard regulatory approvals, Landlord shall, in its
capacity as landowner, work in good faith with Tenant and its contractors to
modify existing zoning, as may be necessary, to allow for the Construction Work
and any Additional Work, including approved Ancillary Development; no action
of any City board or City Council shall be deemed a breach of this provision."

Wow. We're actually getting a professional sports stadium in city limits. This is actually happening.
